7 Things To Be Afraid Of

i decided to combine one of my list posts with today's blog every day in may topic - things you're most afraid of.  yes, i already posted my top 5 irrational fears.  however, i'm going with completely rational fears today.  completely rational little moments that you should be concerned about.  not that i'm saying that those fears you have about spiders and dying alone aren't legitimate.  i am saying that.  but seriously, these are 7 times (that happen fairly regularly) to really, really be worried about.

getting your arm chopped off in an elevator door.  i'm sorry, i don't hold elevators for people by sticking my arm between the doors while they're closing.  if you've ever seen me play sports you know that i have zero coordination and that my reaction time is that of those drivers on weed from the old school 'don't smoke and drive' commercials.  what if the doors keep closing and chop my arm clear off and i'm sitting on the floor of the elevator with a bloody stump?!  not worth you being a few seconds later, sorry.  and you shouldn't do it either.  just wait for the next one.

getting too close to the door/peepholes.  there's a knock on your door when you aren't expecting anyone.  what do you do?  anything but open the door or look through a peephole.  have you never seen a horror movie?  that's how you die.  axe murderers shoot through peepholes and smash their axe through the door right where your head is.  no, best to hide in the other room very quietly.

that moment when you slip, but catch yourself and don't actually fall.  this usually occurs on slippery snow and wet, waxed floors.  no, you don't actually crash to the ground, but your heart just stops for a few seconds.  no big deal.  just feeling like you might die.

standing to close to the edge of the subway platform.  i even get nervous when i see other people too close to the edge.  like someone, or even an imaginary gust of underground wind, is going to come and push you off right before the train comes and crushes you.

when someone says 'i need to talk to you about something.'  why do people even phrase anything like that any more??  it means it's bad, people.  don't say that and then follow it up with 'what are you wearing to tony's party?'  not cool.  i always assume 'i need to talk to you about something' means you need to tell me about something stupid i did, or that something terrible has happened.  like your boyfriend cheated on you or you're pregnant.

being boxed in on the highway by semi-trucks.  you're happily chugging along in your lane and all of the sudden there's a semi in front of you, a concrete divider to one side, and and another semi to the other.  you're trapped.  and probably one of those trucks is going to tip over and crush you.  claustrophobic moment at it's finest.

the moment you get cold called on in class.  even if you did the homework, even if you know the answer.  the moment you hear your name called and you aren't expecting it, your heart always skips a beat.

what moments are you afraid of?

  1. I hate when people "need to talk to you about 'something'". Lets be real here, it's never something good! I especially hate if someone says is at work. Ugh!

  3. I HATE I need to tell you something. It immediately makes me anxious and want to down a whole bottle on Xanax.

Almost all of my fears come back to horror movies or true crime shows. I have no idea why I torture myself with them.

    1. I won't even watch horror movies any more, because I pick up every fear they ever show. It just seems so real!

  4. My dad's voicemails are literally ALWAYS "call me. I need to talk to you." Then it's about getting pizza. WTF!!!! He won't stop no matter how much my brother and I rag on him.

I want to grab people and jerk them back from the edge of the train platform at least once every morning and evening.

  5. I go out of my way to avoid walking over manhole covers and any kind of grates on the sidewalk; I feel like they're going to break and I'll fall right through. That fear is totally rational, right?

  7. I am deathly afraid when a knife when a person lifts a knife off the counter. Use it to chop or set it down, period. I don't want to lose a toe because somebody else is too animated while making me dinner.

I am also afraid of being on the teaching end of a surprise observation from a colleague. In four years nobody has observed me so you'd think I'd forget about it....but one day it'll happen and will be glad I wore that cardigan in the hot weather to hide the beads of sweat on my neck and back.

  8. I hate when people say "I need to talk to you" or in a meeting with the boss "I have something to talk to you about but we can talk next week" UGH! It makes me so nervous. The door/peephole thing is so me, I won't even answer the door- I run and get Chris. He gets so annoyed, haha

  9. I totally agree. I always stand as far away from the subway platform edge as I possibly can!

  10. I am with you in the semi thing. If I even get close to getting boxed in, I will speed as fast as I need to to get out of there! I don't care if I cop catches me, I just have to get out... it feels like the semis are closing in!

  11. I was just talking to my boyfriend about this. He will say my name like, "Rachel?" but the way he says it sometimes it sounds like "we need to talk." It never is, and he normally ends up saying something really sweet, but it scares me! I won't answer my front door either. I pretend like I don't exist too! haha. I'm also scared that I will fall off the edge of something, so don't expect me to get too close to look over the edge!

    1. Ooo yeah that certain way people will say your name always makes it sound like something bad! I think not answering the door is totally acceptable, you're just ensuring you don't get murdered.

  12. hahaha I love these and thank you for another fear....the elevator one....although i just started punching the door open button. Anyways I have the same semi-truck fear!! or driving right next to another car...i freak out because a neighbor once told me that if you drive right next to another car and that car's tires blow, then your car gets hit bad.

  18. OMG.... "i need to talk to you" seriously makes my heart pound in my chest and anxiety is kicking in... and then it usually it turns out to be "hey, lets go shopping" or some lame shit. And then I want to punch whoever said that in the fucken throat.

  20. I'm terrified of peepholes! I know there's glass there but I'm always afraid someone will poke my eye out! And I totally agree with the "I have to talk to you about something" thing! WTF! Just tell me or wait to tell me, but don't tell me you have something to tell me so I can spend all day anxious, wondering what I did wrong!

  21. slipping is the worst, I always feel like 80,000 people just saw it happen and feel like a loser. and being next to a semi? hate it. I feel like they don't see me and they're going to come into my lane and kill me.

  22. Irational fears of the semi's are totally normal. The elevator one doesn't get me, but now I'm gonna think of you all the time when I jump on one. Oh, and you totally forgot about spiders... I have a major fear of those nasty creepy freaks!

  35. OMG totally going to use the "talk" line on shitler tonight.
    it's going to be great.

also - i have an irrational fear of escalators and also the door thingy that it's in a circle and your motion propels it forward. like i cannot handle either one.

  36. i HATE when people say, "i need to talk to you about something." makes my stomach turn every single time. just come out and say it! good grief!

  37. omg i agree 1000% with all of these! except the subway thing, but only because i've never been on one to have encountered that! haha

  38. Boxed in by semi trucks - hate! Also hate being between a semi and a median divider. You forgot the moment you step on an escalator and think you may lose your balance and knock everyone down with you!
