7 Adult-Like Things I'm Good At

i read a book.  this may not be a big deal for most people, and you may even think, given my english major background, that i in fact read books all the time.  this would be false.  after all the books i had to read for my major, and then law school, ugh, i just stopped reading.  if i wasn't forced to for law school, (and let's be honest, even that i found ways around) i just didn't read it.  so if i actually read a book, it better be worth my time.  i decided to go with adulting: how to become a grown up in 468 easy(ish) steps because it sounded like something i could use and possibly would be funny.

i was right.  it's pretty good and cleverly written.  i'm a fan, it was funny.  and i learned things.

one thing the book mentions in the intro is that we don't give ourselves nearly enough credit for the things we do well.  yes, i'm fairly all-consumed with my complete ineptitude with anything involving money or numbers.  i just don't do it.  i always pretend i want to track my spending and that maybe today is the day i'm going to make a budget.  but i don't.  i mean, i pay my credit card off in full every month so i can't be that bad, but... i should probably be saving more than what my parents have done all my life for me.  it just never occurs to me come pay day.

i am good at some adult-like activities though, that i should really give myself credit for.

keeping my place organized.  it's not always freshly lysol-ed clean, but it's never dirty and nothing is out of place.  100% ready for someone to stop by unexpectedly, at all times.

staying on top of e-mail.  blog e-mails, personal e-mails, work e-mails.  i handle everything as close to when i receive it as possible, and i never leave the office with any e-mails in my blog or work accounts.

remembering birthdays (and i have no facebook.)

remembering appointments and being on time.  yes, i use my planner religiously but i often just remember appointments and plans i've made.  and i am never, ever late through any fault of my own.  yeah, if i'm stuck on a non-moving train not at a stop, i have no choice, but i usually head some place so early that even that wouldn't be an issue.

getting along with my parents.  i actually really like them.  we rarely argue.  never with my mom, occasionally with my dad because we have the exact. same. personality.  so we're both stubborn and feisty and always right.  but i would say 98% of the time, things are excellent.

making my bed every day.  this is new for me over the past year, and i'm pretty proud of it!

i'm magic at getting stains out of clothes.  i don't know where i learned this, but i'm darn good at it.

so there, there's my list to look at during those moments when i feel like i'm failing at being an adult.  because i'm not, just because i can't budget and i spend $12 on martinis doesn't mean everything else i do correctly doesn't count.

and now, what adult-like thing are you good at?  answer in the comments to win a copy (a hard copy, not kindle) of adulting: how to become a grown up in 468 easy(ish) steps.  a random number generator will pick a winner.

*the author doesn't know about this.  i just thought it was a fun read and i'd like to pass it along to someone else.

  1. Wow. I'm jealous. The first three things I'm the worst at! And they do so sound adult like.

I'm pretty good at drinking beer. But seriously, idk what adult things I'm good at. Oops. I guess I am ALWAYS on time. =)

  2. I'm good at grocery shopping. That's something adult like right? I'm always feel a sense of pride when going through the store in a methodical manner, grouping like items in my cart...frozen items, cans, boxes, etc. Adult or OCD? Not sure, but it makes me feel adult like when I buy my own food.

  3. In my opinion being a good dog mom (or cat mom in my case) is the sign of adulthood haha. I may not have me together, but the kitty is well taken care of and usually gets more food and toys that I do!

  4. I'm impressed! Some of these things I struggle with (i.e. making the bed? doesn't usually happen in our house except for when the sheets get washed). I am good at SOME adult-things, though. I am pretty crafty and can do things like make plaques for the walls, scrapbook, and decorate my house. I also am a little OCD about how the dishwasher gets filled and can usually stay on top of the laundry (for the most part).

  5. hmmm adult things... I think what I do for a living is pretty adult-ish. hahaha... Saving lives @ the hospital every day ain't your typical teenage job, right?

also of course, making sure that Chimmy is on top of his things. Grooming, Vaccines, Food & Potty pads... He is due for his deep teeth cleaning by the end of the year (since he hates getting his teeth clean by me. Meanie).

    Plus Hawkeye looks so sassy.

  7. I stay on top of email and remember birthdays like it's my J-O-B! Making my bed every day? Not so much. Oops!

  8. You should see the organizing I have done today! Man! It must be the Scorpio in us.

And I remember phone numbers. I am really good with phone numbers. Oh, and social security numbers too.

  9. You go girl!! I am only good at two of those things... being on time and getting stains out of clothes. Other than that, I hav some growing up to do.

  10. I love that you make sure your dog gets it's meds but don't take your multivitamin...that sounds just like something I would do. If I had a pet. I can't commit to that yet :)

As far as adulating goes, I'm really good in a crisis. I am one of those people who just sees exactly what NEEDS to be done and makes it happen.

I'm also never late of my own doing.

I'm almost always prepared for most situations.

I'm terrible at going to bed when I *should*, and somehow, library books never make it back in time.

    1. Those are all adult things, it's good to have someone that can handle a crisis!! I'm sure if I rented library books, I'd never return them on time, don't feel too bad ;)

  11. Sounds like a fun read!! I am the opposite of almost all the things you have listed...i blame grad school...my apartment did not get cleaned as it should have this year because of....(say it with me) grad school! I'm ok with emails....unless I just want to avoid the person for whatever reason, or i'm too tired to respond to blog emails at that moment, but I'll respond like the next day!! I can't remember birthdays for the life of me...I don't know why :( I'm ok at appointments (like doctor and meetings)....everything else (especially cat-kids stuff)....*once again with feeling* grad school!!
How long can I use grad school as an excuse? ;) lol!!
I'm good at making doctor/dentist appointments...like check ups
    I'm good at laundry
And....oh hell I was stuck in adult/grad student land for so long I'm partial adult!! lol!!

  12. You are so much more of an adult than me! I think that the only adult thing I'm good at is the email thing. I, too, hate to leave any unanswered for long stretches of time. But yeah, that's about it! haha

SO great to meet you tonight! Let's hang out again soon!

Also, that is an amazing picture of Hawkeye! What a cutie!

    1. I agree! Staying on top of it before you have 1000s in your inbox, I'd say that's pretty adult!

  18. Wes wants to live with you. He said he can not go on another minute with scraggly hair. Actually you just shamed me into calling the groomer. This book sounds hysterical I have to have it. I answer emails quickly too. I have my work email on my phone, so if its important I will respond even when I'm not in the office. I'm pretty good at planning stuff. I may forget what it is I am suppose to be doing, but I know what the girls are suppose to be doing. I guess thats something.

  19. I am good at scheduling, cooking, cleaning, dog care, organization, and running large events for fun or philanthropy.

  20. I am finally good at getting up early. I never understood when my parents or grandparents woke up before 9 on weekends (it used to be that anything before 11 impressed me). Now I am up before 8 on my days off and it freaks me out.

I am also good at meal planning. I usually plan the week's meals on Sunday then head to the grocery store. I don't know when that started and at first my husband made fun of me but it makes me feel pretty Martha Stewart-y.

I am still pretty terrible at folding clothes before they get super wrinkly, taking the garbage out, and yard work.

  21. This is actually on my list to read. I'm good with the being on time (or early as you know haha) and I'm with you on the arguing with the parents. My parents and I are just chill most of the time it makes life so much easier for the times when other aren't!

  22. I never read a single book I was supposed to read in high school//middle school. not one single page of any of them. whats funny is now I actually like to read.. I actually purchase books to read, have favorite authors, and have a goal to read 20 books this year.

I'm top notch at remembering appointments//events and being on time to everything.

  23. Let's see. I pay a mortgage and have done so since I was 27. But I still break the budget and spend $12 on martinis. Can't balance everything!

  24. Budgeting is the worst. Your email prowess astounds me - I am TERRIBLE at all email (even personal and work). But I'm definitely adding the book to the list of things to check out!

  25. This is awesome. Let's see... Im a good mommy. I keep up with laundry and most of the time the dishes. I'm organized so I know where everything is unless "someone" misplaced it. I get along with my family. I like to grocery shop.

  26. Ooohhh I am so with you on having an organized house, staying on top of my email (there are 5 in my inbox that need to be addressed, but will take time, and it is driving me CRAZY), making the bed, and getting along with my parents.

I am also kick ass at waking up before my alarm (which is kind of annoying sometimes) and love getting up early and being productive in the morning.

  27. I'm good at cleaning up my bedroom and bathroom when things get a little too messy for my liking. I'm good at checking and responding to e-mails. I'm also really good at not being a hoarder because too many things cause me anxiety somewhat so when something needs to go, it is gone.

Also, that smiling picture of Hawkeye is adorable!

  28. Sounds like an interesting book! & You really are a top-notch dog mommy, Miss Hawkeye is so precious! Miss Sassy pants!
Umm, lets see...I'm opposite of you with the saving/budgeting thing. If I stay on course with it, I'm good. I even save other peoples money for them and help them figure out how they should budget things out.
I'm pretty good with birthdays also (if I know you fairly well) , without the FB reminder.
I hate cleaning and sucks at doing it regularly, but when I DO clean good I always so good & feel super proud afterwards!
hmm...that's all I got right now, lol!

  29. Remembering appointments and being on time is so totally adult of us. I'm also w/ you on the daily bed-making; it makes me feel so accomplished first thing in the morning.

I hardly ever feel like a "real" adult, but I guess I can take pride in the fact that I always pay my bills on time and I'm really good about sending out thank-you cards in a timely fashion; that's all you need in life, right?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sounds like you are rocking adulthood. Be proud.

I'm great at planning trips... good at meal-planning/grocery shopping/cooking... and I'm REALLY good at sitting down with a big-ass glass of wine...

  32. OMG.......Hawkeye and her summer do is adorable!!!
Ugh...budgets...we try them, I suck at them. End of story. Being a grown-up really blows sometimes!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Most importantly, you told Hawkeye to say, "cheese."

Budgets are full of shit. That is what I have learned this year.
