A to Z of Annoyances: C is for Cancellations

and i mean television show cancellations.  i don't even know if this can be classified as an annoyance so much as a downright devastation.  some shows, admittedly, just have to be done.  as much as i hate to admit it, dawson's creek was at the end of it's rope.  at least i got a nice wrap up with that one.  but nothing makes me crazier than deciding i adore a tv show just to have it yanked out from under me.  rude!  don't trust the b in apt 23?  that shit was gold, what was that about?  james van der beek was playing james van der beek for crying out loud, how could you cancel that with no warning?!!

as if cancelling a show wasn't bad enough, most of the time they don't give you the closure you need.  and i need closure, people, i get legitimately sad at the end of a show.  like a friend leaving.  i need to know what happens to my favorite characters.  of course, cancellations after one season are devastating, like young americans and higher ground starring a pre-star wars hayden christensen.  but at least those didn't run long enough for me to really get attached to the characters.  my biggest annoyance is the cancellations of my favorite long running shows with no wrap up story.  like:

gilmore girls.  whaaat?  rory just leaves?  lorelai finally gets luke, rory says no to logan and then just up and leaves stars hollow... i don't even know what to do with myself.  i need answers people.  i need a wrap up episode or a movie, something.

veronica mars.  i always hear rumors of a movie.  is that happening?  can it happen?  if you watch the dvd version of veronica mars, they show you a preview of what would have been the next season, it seemed like a few years in the future when she was working for the fbi.  and she winds up with someone completely different than logan, duncan, or piz.  come on, why did that show not happen?!  i would have watched religiously!

my boys.  i'm not sure if it's my love of sports or the fact that it was set in chicago, i absolutely loved this show.  the bar, crowley's, with all the games - real place (named guthrie's though.)  i don't even know why my boys it went away, people loved it.  and now i'm left wondering what happened.  do p.j. and bobby ever work out?  does andy ever get out of his car?  does mike stop being creepy?  this is important information!

(i also get told a lot i look like p.j.  probably we're both blonde?  whatever, i'm taking that as a compliment, she's pretty.)

and even though they were only 1 season, i think that i got attached enough to the characters to be legitimately upset at the cancellations:

firefly.  pretty sure the cult following on this is huge.  and for good reason, this show was great.  at least they made a movie but it still left so many questions.  i need to know what happens to river.  does she kill all the reavers?!  does she take down the alliance?  and poor kaylee, in my mind she'll still be becca from flash forward.  does she end up with simon? (technically answered in warehouse 13 but not enough of an answer for me damnit)  where do they all go after they bury wash?

and my favorite tv show of all time - my so called life.  i was (am) obsessed.  gorgeous jared leto and the only time i've probably ever liked claire danes in a role.  maybe i hate her because it's her fault it was cancelled.  and i just don't know what happened to everyone.  i think it's safe to assume rayanne killed herself via some form of overdose but what about everyone else?  does danielle ever stop whining?  does rickie ever get a boyfriend?  does jordan learn to read and realize he's better than angela?

i need answers, tv producers.  get on this.  and also, perhaps i should stop getting so invested in tv shows that i think i'm friends with these people in real life.  lord help me when there's no more downton, orange is the new black, or the league.  (uh... or psych, or revenge, or supernatural, or lost girl, seriously someone take my tv away.)

what show are you most peeved about getting cancelled?!

  1. I completely agree with you on Gilmore Girls! And the Veronica Mars movie is being made right now, they started a funding project for it (I donated to get a t-shirt!)

  2. OMG seriously My Boys freaking LOVE that show. It was soooo good. I was also a big GCB fan that was also a good one. I wish they would have some closure to these shows it's mean to just leave it hanging.

  3. Veronica Mars IS going to be a movie - I've never seen the show, though! And the boy is trying to get me into Firefly... Guess I should give it a shot?

  6. totally agree on this! i loved my boys! and ummm i didn't know whitney was cancelled until i read the comment above. UGH.

the worst is when you know a show has been cancelled, but there are still a few episodes aired after that. it's like, "do i watch? do i just give up now because ultimately they're abandoning me in a few weeks?"

  7. I'm so excited for the Veronica Mars movie! I can't believe that it's finally happening. I've seen pictures of Veronica and Piz filming, so I know that it's for real!

  11. Like the others said, VM is going to be a movie. They're filming now.

There will never be another show like My-So Called Life. I am still devastated, all these years later, that they cancelled it after only one season. I can guarantee you whoever made that decision seriously regrets it. And yes, the final season of Gilmore Girls was way too rushed. I miss those ladies.

  15. Even though 90210 was done, I would've been content to see it on TV every week now.

I cannot believe Happy Endings was cancelled.

I recently re-watched My So Called Life. Only one season. WHY.

  18. My husband loved Firefly, and I loved Don't Trust the B--. They always cancel the good stuff! I loved GCB that came on in April 2012 on ABC, but they canceled it too :-(

  19. I stopped watching Gilmore Girls somewhere along the way, I think right after she left for college. I always liked that show though. Maybe I should go back and watch it all.

  20. Love, love, love this post! I am always way too invested in my tv shows, but I just don't care! They make me happy! I was definitely irritated with the ending of Gilmore Girls. Totally needed more! GCB like Whitney mentioned above was great! Lipstick Jungle, The Black Donnelly's, Young Americans, Models Inc., and one of my absolute faves October Road all ended way too soon and without closure! October Road had Jake from One Tree Hill in it and I loved it! Even though Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, The OC, and Life Unexpected wrapped things up at the end I still want more! I love(d) those shows! Hello! My name is Vanessa and I have an addiction to television shows :) I always will! I don't know what I will do if(when) they would take Pretty Little Liars, Nashville, and Copper off the air!

  21. I absolutely loved My Boys!! Was definitely mad when that one was cancelled!!

And Firefly...I love watching those episodes on Netflix. I watch Castle and Nathan Fillion`s character always references the show...he dresses as a space cowboy every year for Halloween. Love it.

  22. I was broken by Firefly, Gilmore Girls, Freaks and Geeks, and will be broken when they finally cancel Community (one more year at least still!!)

The entire Veronica Mars movie was (over)funded by kickstarter after they got all the characters to agree to do it, so it should happen sometime soon.

@V if they took Pretty Little Liars off the air you could read the books maybe, I don't know if the show follows them really or not.

    1. Freaks and Geeks almost made the list, that ended so abruptly! I cannot wait for the Veronica Mars movie though, that is SO exciting.
Pretty Little Liars kind of follows the books, in a round about way. Books are better, obviously.

  23. There was this one show on Fox when I was in high school - I think it was called Reunion? I got so into it & it was cancelled after NINE FREAKIN' EPISODES! We didn't even learn who the killer was! Psh...these TV rep guys who go and cancel shows don't know what they're doing.

  24. OH MY GOD YOU MENTIONED FIREFLY. YES. I AM STILL SO UPSET THAT IT WAS CANCELLED. NATHAN FILLION IN HIS PRIME. But seriously, my die-hard Firefly friend got me into it THIS YEAR and I still haven't forgiven her completely for introducing me to that heartbreak.

    1. Also can I say that the movie showed how much Whedon had planned for the show and it would've been EPIC to see everything in the movie drawn out. Ugh.

    2. Yes!! The movie answered a lot of questions the show left but there is still so much more even after the movie that they would have done. And the movie skipped details, it would have been great to have more seasons!!

  25. I think a Gilmore Girls movie would be AWESOME!

  26. I almost cried when ABC cancelled Happy Endings. Seriously, it was soooooo freaking good. And set in Chicago! Watch the first 3 seasons...or don't b/c it was only 3 seasons and you'll feel so unfulfilled.

Friday Night Lights was another underrated show that I think had a pretty big following. Mmm, Tim Riggins.

  27. Oh my gosh, My So-Called Life! Loved that show. When Jared Leto announced Kanye on the VMAs the other night I was reminded of why I've loved him since I was 5 years old. And yes, I'm totally with you on needing closure. I blogged about this too not long ago, haha.

  28. show cancellations can piss off. there was a show called like FlashForward or whatever that I was loving. I don't think it even went a whole season. Community almost was cancelled. Cougar Town switched channels after almost being cancelled too. I get very upset thinking about it. A Gilmore Girls movie would be amaze.
