Little Life Win // Perfect Timing

1.21.2014
nothing brightens my day like perfect timing.  let's be honest here of course - i'm never late.  i plan for things to go wrong, like terrible traffic or a delayed train, so even if the worst happens, i'm still prepared.  but nothing compares to the feeling of none of those things happening.  it's easy to get frustrated at traffic jams and complain about the train never getting you to work on time, but i like to counteract that with appreciating every moment that i don't have to wait.  the little things, those that make it the perfect lucky day like when you can:

beat that red light.  not the time when it turns yellow and you gun it, but the time you're cruising along and you sail under it right when you see it turn yellow.  it's like it waited just for you.  and you know it's going to be the best day ever and you should probably buy a lotto ticket when it happens for 4 lights in a row.  smooth sailing, straight down the street.

walk up right when the train/bus/cab is arriving.  do you know how rare that is in the city?!  almost always you've either missed it by inches or you sit around waiting and wondering (particularly with those metra trains that claim to run on an hourly schedule but rarely ever do, and cabs who come 5 at a time but then never again for 20 minutes.)  catching your transportation perfectly on time is a godsend.

beat the timer.  i never unload the dishwasher as fast as i do when the microwave is counting down 30 seconds until my food is ready.  all of the sudden i'm in competition with this ticking clock and the race is on to get every dish in the rightful spot before the buzzer dings.  the ability to finish and stop the timer on 1 second is one of the most gratifying moments ever.  graduating high school/college/ law school?  acing a final or a job interview?  nope, still second place to the feeling of unloading the dishwasher with 1 second to spare on the microwave.  i'm not sure if that makes me crazy or just uber competitive, but i might need to reassess my priorities here...

but if it's made it's way to internet meme status, clearly i'm not alone in this.  alternatively, maybe we're all the same amount of crazy.

regardless, perfect timing is easily one of my favorite little ways to win at life.  is it just me?  am i the only one who gets intense satisfaction when i change the radio station in time to hear my favorite song start?  or flip to the right channel right when a disney classic is starting?

  1. Yes to all that! My favorite timing thing is when I get a roll going of the same awesome song on radio stations in the car. I had it happen four times once it was magical!

  3. I try and do jumping jacks while waiting. It tricks me into thinking I've exercised.

  5. I totally do this!! When I bake cookies I try and wash all the dishes I can during the 8-10 min the cookies are in the oven. It always gets me moving faster!

  6. I love this post. I bargain with myself that I can watch a show if I can get all the chores done during the commercials. Shit gets done WAY faster that way. Well, over here anyway :)

  8. I love when I see weird memes and know I'm not alone, haha!
I loooove good timing! Getting to work and THEN the snow starts, reaching a check out line BEFORE everyone else swarms around all of a sudden... nothing better. :)

    1. Not that you're in any race to home parking spots, since you can just park willy nilly in Iceland!

  11. I always appreciates these little moments as my impatience is hindering. Thank goodness I live in a country known for being on time :)

  13. I never realized that about the microwave but I totally do the same thing. It IS motivating to try to get things done and beat the timer. Hmmm now I'm going to notice from now on, thanks for that!

  14. Haha yes! Perfect timing can make everything just right! When I am driving home and catch my favorite songs on all the stations I might as well be floating on a cloud of happy :)

  15. Seriously one of the best things is coming up to the platform as the train is approaching...commuting can be such a hassle and it's those little things that make it easier! And I'm with you on trying to beat the buzzer....we all have our quirks haha!

  16. I love trying to see what I can get done before the microwave, and I love it even more when I win. getting that green light is always good, too. but every time my dad and I are in the car together, every single light goes red and we have to stop, it's horrible.

  17. Tyson is a channel flipper, it annoys me but he always knows when to turn it back to the channel we were watching so we don't see any commercials OR miss any of the show. I don't know how he times it perfectly but it's reason enough for me to give up the remote.

  18. If perfect timing ever happened to me, it'd be perfect timing to get hit by lightening. I'm pretty sure of it.

  19. My perfect timing is when I get through an automatic door before it closes. You know, when someone ahead of you has pushed the button for it to open so you race against time (while looking perfectly sane) to get through it too. No? Just me?

  20. Oh goodness, perfect timing on this post (ha!) On Monday I waited for 35 FREAKING MINUTES at a restaurant for a friend. Like sat in a booth taking up a poor waitress' table, when it was crowded. I was PISSED. And as angry as I was, I made use of the time, paid some bills on my phone and caught up on emails.
And I 100% try to do ALL THE THINGS before the microwave timer is done!

  21. I'm always early for everything because I have a big fear of being late. But, I love perfect timing...it rarely happens to me...but it's so nice when it does.

  22. There is this one light that I have never gotten to go through while it's green in the almost 4 years that I've made the same commute. A couple of weeks ago, I went right through it and felt like I won the lottery. It's the little things!

  23. I have this theory that I regularly tell Derrick - public transportation only works when I've been drinking. Don't ask my how, don't ask me why but for the life of me, catching a cab is just downright impossible for me... unless I'm drunk. Then they seem to just appear out of thin air. I even convinced myself at one point that the same thing happened with buses after I walked out of a bar and saw my bus sitting right there. I mean, I didn't even know how far that bus route went so what are the chances that it'd be sitting right outside my bar the second I walked out?

  24. Beat the timer is my very favorite game to play.

  25. hahaha beat the timer...nope don't do that because i'm already trying to do 5 things at once...like this morning....i was curling my hair while eating my breakfast at the same time prepping the crock pot for dinner tonight and getting dressed to go to work...i also sneaked in putting moisturizer on...but totally agree with the red lights and the fave song on radio :)...or that moment when Mean Girls is just starting on cable tv

  26. I totally play the beat the timer game and also do this during commercials! Yay to finding another Chicago blogger :)

  27. I LOVE competing with the microwave. MY argument is that it teaches me how much I can accomplish in a minute! :)

  28. I do this all the time with catching up on my TV shows. I can watch this show but after that I have to do XYZ, then I can watch another show. Or I have to do things during the commercial breaks.

  29. It's kinda like when you play mario kart and don't fall off a cliff.. same thing with redlights haha they just slow down your momentum.

  30. You sound like me when i snooze my alarm in the morning and run to go brush my teeth and wash my face before it goes off again! lol This is normal behavior, at least i like to think it is. Hey whatever motivates you is what i like to say!

  31. Perfect timing is the best! Another one I love is when I finish a project at work and look up to discover that my work day is over and I got everything done in the exact right amount of time. No trying to decide which project you can start next and leave in the middle of or staying a little late because you really have to finish. Just being done right when you're supposed to.

  32. LOL, I totally thought I was the only person that did that! It makes you realize how long 30 seconds can be! I also do this in the morning when I'm making my eggs...i put away dishes from the dish pan or the dishwasher and try to get them all put away without overcooking my eggs. That is a challenge!
