College Versus Adult Parties

February 17, 2014

i really love planning themed parties.  i think i've had parties for just about every holiday now - christmas, new years, st. pattys, halloween - plus every randomly themed bar crawl like bar golf and beer olympics.  i've been trying to think of what my next party should be and i realized just how much more planning would have to go into it than any of the parties my roommate and i hosted in college.  apparently, you're suddenly an adult after college and have to start planning adult-like parties.  why? because:

-apparently there's an age cutoff for keeping a keg in the bathtub.

-likewise, there's also one for keg stands.  (though i refuse to accept an age cutoff for kegs in general, because, tailgating.)

-solo cups are no longer acceptable, unless of course they're in themed colors and decorated.

-you have to serve real food.  sure you can still get away with chips in a bowl, but now you have to include cocktail meatballs, mini quiches, fancy feta dip, and something wrapped in bacon.  i can't drunk bake pizza at 1 am with bacon bits on top and call it 'after party' any more.

-you have to provide decent alcohol.  and alcohol, period.  can't tell people byob anymore and you certainly can't serve natty ice or hawkeye vodka.

ben missed that memo at his tailgate, but we were pleased.

-tara and i have met people who don't know how to play slap the bag.  this never happened in college.  don't worry, we'll teach you.

-there has to be entertainment.  thank goodness for cards against humanity, because in college we just drank and listened to music way too loud.  and played a lot of flippy cup.

-some people have told me there's a cutoff for serving jello shots as well, but i don't listen to them.

i also have to worry about people - where they'll sleep, giving them blankets and such if they stay over, making sure they get cabs... it's exhausting.  i miss the good old fashioned keg parties.

  2. Whoa, that is one stocked fridge full of Jell-O shots!! And although I thought I was familiar with every game played in college, I am not familiar with slap the bag. Did that come out sometime after 2005? Now I feel old ;) and no thank you on the Natty Ice...but I would've gladly accepted one back then!

  3. I still do BYOB, it's just understood down here. Unless it's a HUGE event like a wedding or something.

There's something to be said about a simple party, even though I LOVE to plan the themed ones.

  4. I have never heard of slap the bag, but there is NO cutoff for Jell-O shots.

  6. hmm every party I've been to so far as an adult is just like college parties, only lamer because we're all poor-er and tired-er. (forgive me for butchering English right there.) invite me to one of your parties! I don't care if we play flip cup and eat pizza... in fact, if we play beer pong, I'll be the happiest girl alive!

  8. Haha this is so the truth! We threw our first "adult" party for Christmas and I couldn't believe the amount of money I threw down for it! And yes, there was definitely something wrapped in bacon (potatoes)! How did we get so old?!

  9. Ummm I don't know who these people are saying you've gotta host shit different, but I certainly don't follow the rules. I think it's all still very acceptable. Now about this slap thing you speak of... I must know more.

  14. WTF is Slap The Bag?!?! Is the a midwest thing, cause I have never heard of it. And believe, I used to be the queen of parties, and tailgating.
I feel adult parties are still a perfectly acceptable place to funnel beers. As long as it is good bear, of course.

  16. I once made a jello shot penis (in a cake mold) for a friend's bachelorette party. it ended up not getting eaten, so i spent the next week getting plastered by myself. it was fantastic :)

  17. It was so much easier when all you had to do was bring $5 and you got a solo cup!

  18. Parties in college were so much easier! I miss just sending out a text and that being pretty much the only preparation we needed.

  19. There is no cut off for jello shots. I say you can still do BYOB but call it a wine tasting or craft beer night! :) What is slap the bag?!

  20. I remember when I started to serve food at parties. It was so weird.

    I still do BYOB sometimes.

  21. After playing cards against humanity soooo many times apples to apples is just not as much fun lol. Just get the fancier kind of jello, melon fusion and tropical fusion why yes pleased to meet you. Also do they still make the sparkly jello? Nothing says classy adult jello shot like sparkly jello.

  22. A cut off for jello shots?! We have those at family parties sometimes! lol. My family is awesome though. I still tell people to byob if they're coming over for a last minute get together, but that's because most of our friends that live around us have very different taste in alcoholic beverages than we do. I like dry red wine, and we also enjoy craft beer. Out here in the country people really do prefer the cheap beer and the sweet wine.

  23. Holy jello shots! There's so many in that fridge! This post makes me miss college.

  24. I agree--- there is no cutoff for kegs! Jello shots arent' my thing anymore though and I really have no idea why. I also think that brunch should somehow be in this list as an adult party...

  25. Jello shots are totally ok still :) I use Solo cups all the time! Of course I do have to match to the party theme, because I always have to match to everything! lol!
Entertainment these days...the kids! We throw on some music and the kids start dancing around and putting on a show :) That is exactly what I did as a kid too! We always made routines and such to songs and then would lip sing the songs with choreography and everything for the parents at the end of the night :)
And what the heck is slap the bag?

  26. I love flip cup!! I love that game and I'll still play it and probably win. I'm so much better at it than beer pong.

  27. Oh think are way different from college lol However, I tend to relive the college parties more than I do the adult ones lol Oh man I do love some flip cup!

  29. I agree....Cards Against Humanity is a lifesaver because at least we can still get drunk and rowdy- but it seems a little more acceptable than flip cup! Though shit- I love a good game of flip cup or beer pong every now and then!!

And screw that....I still say BYOB. I'm not buying all the booze for my friends!

  30. But why cant I serve frozen pizzas with bacon bits? I don't want grow up. Nope. :)

  31. I agree with all of this except for the Solo cups. I think they're always allowed here in the south. Ha!

  35. our bonfires are still byob, but we have a few every summer so we'd be broke if we had to provide alcohol for everyone or every bonfire. and I've never played Cards Against Humanity, but I've heard it's fun.. but I'm a huge fan of other card drinking games.

  36. i have an incredibly hard time dealing with the fact that there will come a day when a handle of hawkeye vodka is no longer "acceptable." it really happens, though, huh? hmph.

  39. Ive never played slap the bag! Haha it is way more work to throw a party as an adult. It took so much planning for that NYE party I threw...I remember when all I had to do was get all the ingredients for Jungle Juice and make sure the radio worked.

    ReplyDelete
  40. That fridge full of jello shots! Dang girl. Also, I refuse to believe there is an age limit for those as well. But, I think for the right party BYOB is still totally acceptable. I mean the hosts can't go broke hosting the party. At least, I wouldn't be offended if someone asked me to grab my pick of poison for a party.

  41. Kegs and tailgating will never get old. I love that stuff. Gimme all the Jell-O shots!!! Ok guilty, never played slap the bag. How does it work?

    ReplyDelete
  42. That is a lot more effort! My mom always threw very big themed parties, and my college didn't allow drinking on campus (well, anywhere technically, but people did it off campus enough anyway, they just did it smart). I've never really thought about it, but now that you describe it, college does sound WAY easier.
