Who Knew? I'm Pretty Skilled

sometimes, i really wish i was good at certain tasks - creating new recipes, parallel parking, diy projects, decorating my house by season, putting together fancy outfits, painting my nails.  but the fact is, my talents just so clearly lie elsewhere.  elsewhere meaning 'things that don't actually matter':

i wrap perfect packages and tie perfect bows.  wrapping paper with no edges sticking out, perfectly folding corners, no tape on the actual gift.  and i can tie the perfect tiffany bow - the one where you can just pull one end and it comes undone so you don't have to cut it or untie knots.  my gifts are works of art, truly.

i can braid and french braid my own hair and other people's hair perfectly symmetrically on the first try.  i thought all girls had this innate knowledge but apparently that's not that case.  it was all the years of dance class.  and probably the years of making friendship bracelets.  but i can french braid my own hair in 2 minutes.  the trick is to do it by feel and avoid looking in the mirror while you braid.

folding fitted sheets.  admittedly, i had to learn this from a video from martha stewart, but it was worth every minute i spent practicing.  my sheets look amazing now, all stacked up like a linen store display.

untangling/unknotting necklaces. i'm amazing at unknotting those super thin silver chains with nothing more than my fingers.  even when 10 necklaces get rolled up into a tiny little ball, just give me a few minutes and i'll have them all straightened out.

though i can't come up with new recipes, i can cook from a recipe perfectly.  i'm a good cook if i have a recipe in front of me.  everything i make turns out perfectly.  it's delicious and exactly as pictured.  but i only like recipes with exact measurements for that reason, i don't do recipes that say 'a pinch' or 'add whatever to taste.'

i plan amazing themed bar crawls.  i think of every detail and i've been told numerous times that bar golf (and yes, i made those cards myself for everyone) was 'the best time they've ever had.'  costumes, challenges, drink specials, i'm on top of all of it.  i plan bar crawls all the time for fun, i wish someone would pay me for it.

opening champagne bottles.  i consider this an important life skill, because popping bottles and wasting champagne by fizzing it all over the floor is unacceptable in my presence.

don't worry, i'm also pretty good at drinking it.

  1. We need to be IRL friends! I want someone who will french braid my hair and fold my fitted sheets! I told Brian he should take some hair styling classes but he said no haha! I'm pretty good at wrapping presents but I cannot do bows!

  2. Who needs to know how to parallel park when you can fold a fitted bed sheet, that's a much better talent in my opinion

  3. As we all know braiding hair is definitely not innate in all girls!!! I'm pretty sure I need to see that video and make Kevin watch it over and over.

  4. I am still working on folding a fitted sheet via youtube video. Mine never looks right though. :(

  5. I love that you did an entire post about things you CAN do. I can't do any of those haha except maybe the bar crawl, i can plan some pretty wicked events. We should get together and brainstorm.

    1. It really is very helpful, I can always look like my hair is done when I actually haven't tried!

  7. well now, I think that this seals the deal that we should be real life friends. all my sheets are crumpled at the top of my closet and I literally ran and ducked the last time Derrick opened champagne because to me, it is like a miniature bazooka that I could never, ever think about opening.

  8. I'm actually jealous of your present wrapping skills. Whenever I wrap something it looks like a 4 year old did it haha

  9. Girl, all of these talents are totally legit!

  10. LOVE this...and I need you in my life for oh so many reasons. I can hardly braid my own hair- let alone keep it straight! I can't fold a fitted sheet to save my life AND you can wrap my presents. This is just perfect! ;)

  11. You can fold fitted sheets?! WITCH CRAFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. I can't french braid, at all. I have tried and tried and can't even really regular braid my hair, my husband does that for me. Le sigh, if only!

  13. These are some pretty awesome skills to have, I am going to have to look up the Martha Stewart video for folding sheets, I still need some help in that skills.

    1. Martha is super helpful in this area! Takes a couple practice tries but you'll definitely get the hang of it.

  14. I'm right with you on the present wrapping front! I love seeing a beautifully wrapped gift and bow! I'm so lucky my mom taught me. :) I can french braid other peoples hair perfectly the first time, but I'm crap at doing my own. :( I've given up completely.

I'm going to have to look up that Martha Stewart video. :)

  15. The only thing I'm good at from that list is opening champagne. Which, is a pretty good life skill if you ask me. The rest... I'm rubbish. My gifts look like a 6 year old wrapped them. I can't french braid, and fitted sheets are rolled up into a (neat) ball in the linen cabinet. But, combine some of my awesome life skills with yours, and together- we could rule the world.

  16. i'm hideous at braiding anything. i try and try with kayla's hair and it's awful but she can't see it so i pretend that it looks amazing and she's happy! :) see, the white lies we tell to our kids.

as for the linen sheets, i sort of have the hang of it and if not, i just copy what i saw on pinterest: stick all sheets in a set into one of the pillow cases - it's all hidden and neatly stacked so it will naturally flatten and look perfect....until you open it and see the mess inside haha

  18. My mom can't french braid so I have never learned. I need to have a kid just so I have someone to practice on! I watched the Martha Stewart folding video and my sheets still look like garbage but I'm glad it made sense to you! The one thing on your list I can do is open that bottle of champagne, though. I might be terrible with a corkscrew but give me something sparkling and a dish towel and I'm good to go!

  19. SO jealous of your un-knotting skills!! It is the bane of my existence and I've been known to throw necklaces away :( just because I can't get them untangled...but I also can wrap a mean present :)

    1. That's so sad!! Next time mail them to me and I'll send them back perfectly straightened out :) I have nimble little fingers and nails that can fix anything.

  20. Martha taught me to fold a fitted sheet too!

I cannot french braid for the life of me and have never been able to. I always wish I could.

  21. Damn! Those are some pretty great skills! I can't french braid for my life but I can follow a recipe to the T :)

  22. I can't wrap presents or braid hair! You are definitely a step above me :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I can be good at wrapping if I take my time...but I usually don't. And I suck at folding fitted sheets....I mean I really just don't. lol

    ReplyDelete
  24. AHAHA I love this. I have like 7 silver chains you need to untangle as well as going to a bar crawl with you

    ReplyDelete
  25. I pretty much suck at every single one of these except untangling necklaces, I'm a pro at that!

    ReplyDelete
  26. these all seem like very useful skills! i think the only one i have too is being able to make a french braid sans mirror -- it's amazing how many people comment on it. is it weird that i always wanted to fold fitted sheets better? i'm probably going to be watching that martha video.

  27. I'm completely jealous of your ability to wrap perfect gifts! That's just not something I'm very good at.

  28. Oh wow- except for following a recipe and opening champagne, I fail at both the things you can do and the things you listed you can not. I need some skills!

    ReplyDelete
  29. You have some skills I'm pretty envious of. Wrapping, folding a fitted sheet, and especially braiding! I cannot braid for the life of me, it's so depressing.

  30. Can you please teach me how to do like everything on this list?? I still cannot french braid my hair....like seriously that waterfall cascading french braid on pinterest is mocking me. You can fold a fitted sheet? I fold it in fours and shove the corners in and then place something heavy on top of it....I need some serious training!

  31. I'm pretty sure everything on this list is useful!! I would LOVE to do a themed bar crawl! Although honestly, I probably wouldn't last very long these days!

  32. Parallel parking is a bitch! It takes me like 5 tries to get in right. Ooops. I am so jealous, I cant French braid!!! I have never been able to but have always wanted to. Also, I have a necklace that has been knotted up for the last year and I cant for the life of me get it untangled. So I am going to need you to come fix that, please?!

    ReplyDelete
  33. girl, you got skills, i can agree on that. and i can braid my hair, i like that skill a lot.

  34. I would kill to have braiding skills!

  35. Mega jealous of those french braiding skills!

  36. I am a total dunce at braiding my hair and don't get me started on folding a fitted sheet. Drives me nuts! :-P

And I too always have at least one bottle of champs on hand... love it!

  37. Opening a champagne bottle is a crazy good skill as is a great gift wrap!! Sadly I don't have either...

  38. Haha, I've gotta say, I'm mighty jealous of your folding fitted sheets skill!

  39. okay im on my way to chicago right now to have you tie my presents, braid my hair and unknot my necklaces because i WISH I WAS GOOD AT ALL OF THAT

  40. Melissa is an excellent gift wrapper as well. I've never actually opened a champagne bottle, and I'm kind of scared to do so. I feel like it's going to shoot out and kill someone and then fiz everywhere, which as you stated, no one wants that to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I need to send you a pile of necklaces to unknot for me! Ughhhh I'm so bad at it, and they're so tangled! I do, however, pride myself on perfect wrapping! Bows, not so much, but I do try!

  42. I can french braid my own hair but not sure it is very symmetrical. The fitted sheet is very impressive and I watched her video. You got mad skills.

  43. I have never been good at French braiding - it's a skill I hope to develop more of before I have kids. Because little girls with French braids are just too cute!

LOVE the quote at the bottom. Sometimes it really is good to celebrate even if it's just something simple. :)

  44. I can french braid my hair and do braids. No one taught me, so I had to learn on my own lol. I wrap presents pretty well, but my husband takes to a new level--making it perfect, adding bows, ribbons, and all that jazz.

  45. You should open a shop at christmas to wrap presents for people. You could make bank. do it. DO IT.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I am so impressed that you can fold fitted sheets! I always thought I was good at wrapping presents...until you described your talents. Damn, girl!

  47. I've seen videos and picture tutorials on how to properly fold a fitted sheet. I just don't have the patience for it. I half ass fold them and throw them in the linen closet.

  48. Out of all the things on your list, the only one that I can do well is opening champagne. I feel like a failure...then again, I think that's the most important one on the list, no?
