Very Me

do you ever hear that?  that something is 'very you.'  i hear it a lot - 'that is so stephanie' or 'yup, that ___ (top, cocktail, movie) is very you.'  and it's close cousin 'oh you would like that.'

is that a good thing or a bad thing?  if everyone can peg if something is 'very stephanie' does that mean i'm stuck in a rut or set in my ways?  well, i look at it as a good thing.  i'm halfway through age 29, 6 months away from turning 30.  today, actually, is my half birthday and yes i always celebrated as a kid and my mom even made cupcakes so i will forever know when my half birthday is.  and while there's always room for growing and changing in life, i still think you should have a good sense of self by age 30.  i know what i like and yes, i'm stubborn and don't change and my favorite movie in 1997 is still my favorite movie in 2014.  ditto on favorite song.  and band.  and color.  i'm unswayed from my love of country music even though john hates it.  i still love snow more than any other weather even though we just lived through the polar vortex.

my mom calls this 'unwilling to accept change.'  i call this 'confidence in myself and my choices.'  i like what i like, what's wrong with that?  i was laughing about this fact with betsy because i went to my pinterest page and clicked on 'pins' which shows, in order, everything i've been pinning lately.  as in, not categorized by board.  and everything falls into 3 categories - humor, cocktails, and organization.  which is essentially my life in a nutshell.  and this blog.  (likewise, betsy's latest pins are all disney, blog related, and recipes, which is essentially her life in a nutshell.)  i guess we like to pretend we have wide and varying interests more than we actually do.

i'm not sure anyone is as out there and adventurous as they like to think they are.  for every person i know, i can think of at least one thing that would be very them.  a color, a flower, a signature drink, clothes preferences, a favorite sports team.  there's always something that no one will ever talk you out of loving.  i'm closer to the sheldon side of the scale in my love of things - there's a lot, and i'm not willing to give any of them up.  but hey, it makes my life easier because no one ever has to ask what i want to eat or drink or watch on tv (nachos, bourbon, dance moms.)  i embrace my predictability.

what side are you on?  love what you love or always trying new things?

  1. I embrace mine as well. I like to think I'm to some degree unpredictable but there are certainly predictable things about me. They make me, me so ehh I wont argue it.

  2. I'm definitely a love what I love kinda girl. Pete gives me shit for it all the time b/c if I don't want to try a new food, etc then I just WON'T. There's no talking me into it.

  3. I'm probably somewhere in the middle of that. I love trying new things (especially beer, foods, etc.), but once I find something I love (hair products, etc.), I tend to be pretty loyal to it.

  4. I love what I love with no shame in it. You know what, I've eaten mac and cheese almost every week since I was a child and I still love it. You can't mess with it though. That easy mac shit sucks. I am stuck in my ways but there's nothing wrong with that!

  5. Just like you there are some things that I've always stuck to. One of those is the fact that the colour blue has always been my favourite, ever since I was a little kid. I guess some things never change!

  6. I embrace predictability too... here here Sheldon! I'm a woman of routine and I love being comfortable in it. Shake it up a little, but bring me back ;-)

  7. i'm predictable and my hubs - well, you can set your watch by his predictability.... my favorite is when people text me pictures of my favorite designer's store/area in a store and tell me they've found my mothership. yep. you know exactly what i wear and what i don't if you spent more than two days with me.

    1. haha I'm the same way, I have my top 3 stores!! John is super predictable too. We like it that way though :) At least everyone knows where to shop for us, right?

  8. I think its pretty amazing when people can peg things that are totally YOU. Most importantly, they listen and take note of the things you say and do - which shows they care. I love that!

  9. I stick to my ways but travel has really pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me try new things which has been great. But I like my ways and have certain things that are totally me.

    1. You moved to a whole new continent! And you're learning a new language, I'd say that's pretty far out of your comfort zone!

  10. I love something because I've tried others and they failed, so the ones that didn't fail stick around. I will try new foods and experiment but I always ended adding my favorites to the dish.

  11. i'm in the middle. i love my routine/schedule/predictability but i'm also not afraid to try new things and if those new things are awesome, they get incorporated into my life.

    thanks for linking up!

  12. I like a balance of both with a little lean towards stability :) Trying new things is fun but being comfortable is pretty great.

  13. I have a post in draft about my signatures. I'm still trying to get it to work, but I think I'm definitely someone people can say that's very you/you would like to.

I know what I like and what interests me. I know change is constant, but I also know change is never coming in some areas.

  14. I love what I've always loved, I'm not against trying new things but I prefer the comfort of the known.

  15. People who know me are able to say that something is so me, but it's hard to identify exactly what makes those things so. Blues and greens, bows, cats, and food, just to name a few things that have been considered that lately. I like the comfort in liking what I like and knowing that if I'm investing on something for my wardrobe or house that it is "me" and I'm going to still like it in a few years. But, as far as food is concerned, I want to try something new every time and I don't like having a go-to dish!

  16. I love what I love and that's it. I like that people can say that is so you, that just means you made an impression on them that they know you well and makes them think of you. I am always up for new change but I still love what I love and am repetitive with it at times and there is nothing really wrong with that. It just defines you is all :).

  17. Amen to predictability - I could care less if I watch Golden Girls almost every night and the same series of shows I used to watch at age 15. They were awesome then and they're more awesome now. I have always liked the same foods and the same flavors of things - why f with it if it ain't broke? Some things are so simple and comforting nothing new can trump it. Deal with it! Happy Hump Day! -Iva

  19. It's really nice to be able to see something and be like "yup I know that X person" will like it. Makes life easier! What would I do with my time if I couldn't find hilarious pins that I know we'll love?

  20. I am pretty predictable. I mean, sometimes I will venture out and try something new or do something different but....I have certain things I order at most restaurants, certain colors/styles of clothing I gravitate towards, certain scents I constantly wear because I love, my go to make up look, etc.

  21. i despise change. sometimes even if its for the better. i just really really like things the way they are. that's why I hate getting older. i'm a self proclaimed ageist. I think it's really cool that people say that is so you, they probably know you very well and you know what you like!

  22. I always feel like I'm predictable, but then I get around people I haven't seen in awhile -- or even my mom sometimes -- and I realize that I've changed. Like, I've always been a very picky eater, and then we'll go out to dinner and my mom will say "You eat that now?!?"

  23. I think I'm in the middle. I can accept change, but only in small amounts at a time. There are also plenty of things about me that are fairly predictable too.

  24. This is so funny - my best friend says I have "Stephanisims" that no matter what, will occur. And I hate any and all change - I would be fine if I never had to move or change jobs again. Maybe it's a Stephanie thing!

  25. I love to try new things...I actually have very few favorites. It just depends on my mood. I think fashion (or really lack there of) is a very me thing. When I go shopping with friends they can typically pin point the dress or whatever that I'm going to pick up.

  26. In the middle? I definitely have my favorites that I usually go back to but I LOVE trying new things.

  27. I need to check out my pins. I had someone say to me that I don't like change and I have control issues.....yup that sounds exactly like me. :)

  28. I've loved pink and wanted to have a pink wedding like Shelby's ever since I saw Steel Magnolias in middle school, and I did! It will forever be my favorite movie. I am a bit change resistant as well :-)

  29. I am also 6 months shy of 30! November 8th baby :) Sometimes I feel awesome about how much I've changed and grown over the years.... and other times I'm struck by how awesome it is that I still love so many things I loved when I was in middle/high school (and let's be honest... elementary school too).

  30. I'm all about new things but I can be very set in my ways about other things as well. Wednesday will be my half birthday. :)

  31. PREACH sister friend. why spend time doing things you don't like. makes no sense.

  32. I like this. It always makes me happy when someone says something is "so Ashley" because I am proud of those things about me and I like when other people recognize it because it makes me feel special. :)
