My Newest Total OCD Move

alright so remember how i'm apartment hunting?*  well, since i'm moving at the end of august, a full month from now, it seemed totally logical to... start packing.  yeah, you heard me.

my first thought was that if i'm able to pack it up with over a month left, i don't need it.  but that's just not true, since i've mostly packed up winter-y things like boots, sweaters, ice skates, hats, etc.  i realize that this is a risk since i live in chicago and it could potentially snow on august 20th and no one would be surprised, but i resigned myself to the fact that if that happens, i'll just untape the box with the necessary supplies.

which is where my newest total ocd move comes in - my comprehensive box inventory.

when's the last time you packed up?  did you write 'bedroom' on the box and maybe a note or two like 'summer clothes, jewelry'?  or did you number them and then keep a list that says 'box 3 - kuerig, baking pans, silverware'?  even use different colored duct tape to note which boxes went to which rooms?  these are all completely sane and logical ways to keep track of your belongings.  unless you're me, of course, with an ocd brain and way too much time to slowly pack.

so here's what i did instead:

in case you can't tell from the photos, it started innocently enough.  yes, i labelled each box with a number and what room, like a normal person.  on all 4 sides of the box as well as the tops, naturally.  then i got a notepad and wrote down 'box 1 - bedroom.'  all standard packing behavior.  but then, i proceeded to list not just what types of things were in the box but exactly what was in each box.  'winter sweaters' and 'hangers' are simply not good enough descriptors in stephanie world.  it was 100% necessary to instead write '25 beige velvet hangers' and 'teal v-neck sweater from express.'  so now i have a box full of clothes and a 4 page list of what's in said box, down to '1 pair of white, grey and pink athletic socks.'

there is zero part of me that regrets this process, no matter how insane you think i am.  you're just jealous you don't have a complete list of every single item you own, including how many clear push pins are in box 6.

*i've found a place.  it's nestled between two neighborhood corner bars which were clearly designed for me to be a regular at and the downstairs neighbor was brewing a giant vat of beer when i visited.  priorities.  i haz them.

  5. Oh wow. You will hate how I pack. I just throw the breakables with the breakables, the clothes with the clothes, kitchen with the kitchen.. etc. I don't organize a damn thing. I am so ready to be out of that place that I don't even care where my shit goes. Which probably explains why I A. lose some things and B. my very important vase gets broke....

    True. Story.

  6. I completely do this exact thing!!! When I lived with my parents we moved about 4 times and my parents thought I was insane... the last time I moved with my boyfriend we had about 24 hours and so he had to pack everything. When our car broke down and we needed to locate some important papers you can guess who was freaking out!! xx B

  7. Swoon. I'd love to know exactly what I have. I have a ton of shit to run a household and do the holidays, etc.

Your new place sounds perfect! When do you move?

  8. I have no idea how you do it all! I just throw clothes, still on the hanger, in my backseat and call it good. I am such a procrastinator. I want to be like you when I grow up.

  10. lmao you're so cute -that's the most organized packing system I've ever seen. I'm going to recruit you when I have to move for sanity and assistance. I laughed at the 'Penguin Footed PJs' :) Neighborhood bars are DANGEROUS - it means a great place to get fabulous drinks and an excuse to not cook yikes! Happy Hump Day Stephanie! -Iva

  11. I wish I was this organized! I am a lazy packer and just throw everything into random boxes. It makes unpacking a living hell. Maybe I'll try this system when I move next!

  16. I just label the box with what room it goes in - but this seems way more organized and proficient. Also, I'm glad you found a place. Also (again) thanks for the Hawkeye picture yesterday. :)

  17. Ok, so that makes me a bit twitchy... I usually just throw stuff in a box and write "Marla's shit" on it.but hey, I only dream of being as organized as you. Do what works. Go girl.

  18. I basically love the fact that your new neighbor was brewing beer when you looked AND you are by 2 bars! Sounds like a freaking winner to me!

Girl, I am cracking up at your numbers and list!!! I usually write "Living Room" then list a few main things like decor, remotes, curtain rods. Your list makes my eyes twitch just thinking about all the work that takes. I have to unpack everything immediately and can not sleep til it is done...so no need for that much detail for me!

  19. I don't think I have enough patience in the world for that! If only I could be more like you!

  20. That's exactly how I pack! Its the only way I could have moved as much as I have while staying sane. Everyone thinks I'm crazy and everyone but my sister stopped helping me pack years ago. Apparently that is just too much for some people to handle. We moved our office last august and that's how I packed everything for that move too.

  21. A list of every item in the box? You cray. Ha!

  22. That should make things a lot easier if you ever have to file a renter's insurance claim.

  23. My friends totally make fun of me because this is how I pack. You are awesome.

  24. This might just be something that I would do...

  25. I started out all OCD with my packing but that went out the window. I got to tired of being organized I was lucky if things even made it in a box.

You're description of the new place reminds me of How I Met Your Mother and how they have a bar just downstairs.

  26. every time I read about your mad organization skills a part of me thinks you won't want to be my friend anymore...especially since my packing "system" is tragic, even after countless moves across the northeast.

congrats on your new place! i assume hawkeye had to approve and you're nicely situated near a t bell, as well as those bars?

  27. Congrats on finding the apartment!! I also already packed my winter clothes, though we have not even looked for a place yet :) I did not make a detailed list :) At least that way you know what box to open if it does snow!!

  30. I LOVE that you are this insane....I too do this, I once packed for a move 3 months before I left because I wanted to make sure I was organised and stored it all in the bathroom (I had a weirdly large bathroom). Best move of my life!

  31. YOU PACK THE SAME WAY I DO!!!!

Nice to know I'm not the only one who does it this way. It makes unpacking SOO much easier. Plus I know everything is.

  32. That is amazing packing. I would never have the patience to do that method, but defiantly see that it would be the best way to pack/move!
