Not Always a Cheapskate Though

you might remember that last week (my only real post last week, the other was at sarah's.  sue me, it was party tiiiime.) i posted about my cheapskate tendencies.  and while i do love saving all the money i can, there's a few lines i won't cross.  like:

getting food at food banks.  i can cut costs at the grocery all day but the fact is, i have the money to buy food.  some people aren't that lucky.  no way i'm saving a few bucks by getting free food at a food bank, because that's directly taking it away from someone who really needs and relies on those services.  i think extreme cheapskates who do that while their money sits in the bank are pretty terrible.  in a similar vein... i'm not eating roadkill.  yuck.

hair care.  i'll definitely get groupons to salons, but i just can't bring myself to trust my highlights to a beauty school, even if it's free.  haircuts, sure, but highlights are trickier and my hair needs to be watched pretty closely because if you leave the stuff on certain sections too long, it'll start getting white real quick.  i realize it's just hair, but... i really like my hair.  but lazy me really only does this twice a year instead of the every six weeks they say you should, so it's not that much money.  six weeks?  surely you said six months...

cheap beer.  i'll do bud light all day, even busch when it's a beer pong day.  but i draw the line at natty.  that stuff is gross.  if it's cheaper than a 30 pack of busch, i know i can't do it.

internet.  right now, i have free cable with my apartment.  i rarely watch it.  i can't actually remember the last time i watched it... anyway, when it's not free, i won't have it.  netflix, all the way.  but this means i won't ever cancel my home wi-fi.  i am way too attached it!  i'd be more likely to cut my cell phone i never use before i'd cut wi-fi.

and of course,

pet care.  only the best for hrh princess hawkeye.  her food is $25 for a 5 lb bag.  i get the name brand pricey flea and heartworm preventatives because i read reviews that the knockoffs don't work (and can you imagine fleas in all that fur?  i'd die.)  i even get her the expensive potty pads because she doesn't like the cheapies.  she gets all her shots regularly and i even took her for an expensive emergency visit when she chewed her paw and her nail got infected because i didn't want to wait until morning in case something happened.  there is quite literally no amount that i wouldn't spend on that dog.

what are your 'must spend' categories?

  1. The only things I'll shell out some cash for is good food and drinks, my hair and my dog. I'm with you on those.

  2. All the above. And tissues, tp, and laundry detergent. My clothes need to smell extra clean and my ass and nose like to feel soft things on them, not sandpaper!

  3. I only get my hair done every 6 months too, long hair makes it a tad easier! I paid $1400 to have my dogs toe removed due to a tumor. A benign tumor.

  4. I hear ya--internet and hair are my things!

  5. All good things to splurge on!

  6. Dude, I get my hair done maybe once every few months... And I've started going to the gene Juarez academy which I was totally skeptical about at first but they did an awesome job! It took way longer than normal but worth it :)

  7. I hear you on your hair! I may be IN beauty school myself, but fuggitabout ANY of them touching my hair with a pair of shears. I'm the opposite in that I'm okay with the color part, but I've seen some racket do's leaving my school before. Haha!

  8. i would spend money on good food, i love food so i wont compromise on that

  9. When I used to get my hair done regularly, I would always go to the salon. I've had even pretty reputable salons mess it up. I found a hair girl I like, but I haven't been back in 3 years. It was getting expensive, so I just started doing without or doing it myself.

I will spend good money on food and not buy generic brands. The name brands taste better hehe

  10. Always spend money on the pets. They get it all! Wi-fi is a must! I get my hair cut like every six months too. I just can't be bothered.

  11. Yeah, home internet is a mus for me, too, and I kind of can't believe that people would go to food banks to "save money" instead of because they truly need food, that's sad.
With the hair thing, I almost feel like you can't win. I know from experience, there's some people who REALLY know what they're doing and are extremely talented in beauty school....and there are some people who get hired into really nice salons who don't have a clue what they're doing...which is why I try to do my own hair as much as possible... :P

  12. This is the 3rd freaking time I've tried to leave a comment! ARG!!!!!! OK, third time's a charm… Hair care (professional highlights/cut), makeup (I will spend extra money on products without parabens/sulfates/yucky chemicals), pet care (my fuzzies get prescription food at $74 a bag… assholes), beer/alcohol, Coach bags, internet

  13. skin care and makeup, hands down. i'll go super cheap on clothes but NEVER EVER on my skin or makeup. i have dropped $600+ on skincare products without batting an eye but $20 for a shirt? EXTORTION!!!!

  14. Pets, kids, and laundry detergent. I never ever buy cheap laundry detergent, it just isn't the same.

  15. It really warms my heart to see that you have Hawkeye as a major priority. She seems as she is very much your baby..as you call her princess! My animals are my kids to me. I don't understand how people can see them as just animals or just pets. To me, they are a part of my family so I treat them like one!

  16. There's cheap beer and then there's CHEAP beer. I agree. The line is drawn at natty!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ah yes, pets, hair and beer are all places that I will not skimp!!! Also, make up and skin care is another for me. There are a few drug store brands that I like certain things with...but I say you get what you pay for!

  18. My dogs get top notch everything: grooming products, food, treats, health care. We don't spare a dime on any of their visits or preventative meds.

I won't drink Two Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's, it gives me a headache.

    Hair care (cut, color, highlights).

    Laundry detergent - Gain, mayo - Hellman's.

  19. Cooper and my cats are the sole reason why I'm so broke. They only get the best, and Cooper gets a checkup every 3 months because I worry so much about him.

I spend money on my hair, but only 3 times a year.

I will always pay for OnStar, because it did save my life once.

I also only buy free range Ohio raised chicken. Way more expensive, but tastes better and is better for you. Plus I feel a little better knowing they didn't live a crappy life.

  20. Spread the word about not using offbrand flea meds - I made Bauer seriously sick by using one (and now I am a super paranoid cat mother!). Anyways, enough of of my PSA. As you well know, I will spend all my money on food, specifically things that are calorie-laden because nasty sweets have the same fat content as really yummy ones so treat yo'self. Also, haircuts. I just never like the results when I go super cheap so I spend money there.

  21. Well, I am lucky to have a mom that's a hairdresser. SO winning on that.

The only thing I don't get cheap on his feminine products like tampons. Hell no to the generic shit when it's something to do with my lady parts. Ya know!

  22. so i used to go to the school near my house. it used to not be that bad but it would take 6-7 HOURS. that was my whole day. i just couldn't do it anymore!!

  23. I have to have wi fi. I don't trust just anyone with my hair either. I may let my stylist try something new, but I know she knows my hair well so I don't worry. She's the only one that I let do anything to my hair andd there are some food items that I have to have the brand name.

  24. The girl that does my hair down in Texas I actually found at a beauty school. It started because I really wanted a haircut but didn't want to spend $40+ freaking dollars. She's the only one that does my hair now...dying, cutting, whatever. She's at a salon now but she was doing all of that stuff for me before she graduated.

I agree with the food & cheap beer though!

  25. So true on the cheap beer!! I don't even know the last time I had a Natty...and I'm perfectly happy with that!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree with you on the pet thing for sure! And my hair. My self esteem is much to closely related to my hair for me to risk it haha

    ReplyDelete
  27. Good toilet paper and internet! I don't mind spending money on those things because I work to save in so many other places!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'll spend money on food. There are certain things that I'll buy store brand.. But cheese? No. I can't. I'm with Destiny on toilet paper, too.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The internet is what is keeping me from canceling my cable. I keep calling back trying to figure out how much i can save having internet only!

    ReplyDelete
  30. My hair and skin products are my non-cheapskate purchases. And of course, my Lily. The pets get everything.

    ReplyDelete
  31. YES to pet care! I would gladly spend money on JC before I'd spend it on myself.

    ReplyDelete
  32. yes to internet + pet care. but how cute is your dog?!

  33. I hate cheap beer. I will drink it if its the only thing available, but I'm all about paying a little more for something good. Kinda the same with wine. I skip the $5 and go for a $10-$15 bottle (hey, I'm skill kinda cheap!). I am getting better about paying for quality clothing too. If its a staple piece, I will pay a bit more for better quality.

  34. I would spend my entire savings on Walter if I had to (which I don't because I have a Care Credit credit card just for his expenses haha!). Also, I heard the heartworm stuff you can order online (like 1800 pet meds) isn't always legit. My vet told me that the online stuff isn't actually checked out and it could be expired or something else entirely. Walter gets the good stuff straight from the vet.

  35. I love these posts! It's so interesting, especially how similar we are in the save/splurge department. Can't agree more about the hair. I'm all about a cheap hair cut, but never skimp on the highlights. It's possible to screw up blonde hair. It's happened to me. Never again. Every six months. lol

  36. Hair is not something to skimp on. I recently decided to try the local Aveda Institute school because my normal colorist was booked a month out and they RUINED my hair. I had to go back to get it fixed the next day. I have never been one to get upset about my hair, figuring it can always grow back, but that day I cried.

  37. We have a local tractor supply store here that sells 40 pound bags of great dog food for less than $30. Score!

  38. LOL @ Natty!! My ex used to drink that all the time, and then he got stuck on Heineken. However, if I had to buy his beer more than twice a week, he was getting the cheap stuff!! Maybe Pabst, if I was feeling generous, lol
