February Spending Recap

if you remember, i did a full spending freeze for february.  i do think my frost has been going will since september but i saw some things slip by in december and january that definitely could have been avoided.  so, february was the month of zero spending.  or so i planned.  i didn't succeed, but i think i was pretty fantastic!

february 2
+$190 blog income (clever girls, blogher)

february 3
-$5 itunes movie.  john was in town this week for training classes, so he came over and i cooked.  netflix was down (i was so mad) so we settled on an itunes movie.  definitely a spending freeze fail  but really netflix, you probably owe me $5.  that was all your fault.  but john bought the extra ingredients to complete the meal (meatballs, garlic bread) so that was some money saved for me.

february 6
+$25 paypal from swagbucks

february 7
-$27 petsmart for dog food

february 9
-$25 groupon.  for a brazilian wax, which is on my 101 list and i'm totally terrified.  i figured jump on the groupon while it was cheap plus had a discount code that applied.  i actually already scheduled it too so i can't wuss out (i cry when i get my eyebrows waxed and haven't done it in at least 4 years.)

february 13
+$25 paypal from swagbucks

february 14
-$70 hawkeye to the groomer.  technically money spent and therefore against the rules but she goes every 2 months (6 weeks in the summer), it was already set, and there's zero percent chance of me ever grooming this:

on my own.  her groomings are the some of the best money i spend all year.
-$20 vet prescribed food.  it cleans her teeth and it has to be ordered from the vet.  since i was in the area, i picked it up, even though i wasn't planning on getting it until march.  oh well.

february 20
+$6 blog income (ad sales)

february 23
+$25 paypal from swagbucks

february 25
+$15 blog income (collective bias)

february 27
+$3 blog income (ad sales)

february 28
+$50 5 hours of dog sitting

total: -$147, +$339 = $192

so yeah, pet supplies.  pet expenses did me in this month, but i will never not spend money on that dog, whenever she needs it.  including next month, at her yearly vet visit, at which i anticipate spending ohhhh $400.  sigh.  other than that, i had a feeling it would be a smooth.  i spent 10 days at my parents house, watching their dogs.  their dogs are more on a schedule than hawkeye, so i went straight to and from work back to the pups.

here's how i feel about those fails though - to me, a spending freeze is supposed to make me more mindful of what i don't actually need.  to get me to use what's in the pantry before buying anything new, to stop the money trickle that is coffees or packs of gum, to accept that i don't actually need any more clothes.  not to suffer (or make the dog suffer) when i run out of something truly necessary.  and whether or not i pushed the grooming and dental food back to march doesn't really matter, because i was definitely going to buy those things.  whereas the instant gratification that is coffee or last minute chipotle, i wouldn't go out march 1 and buy all those things i skipped.  that's what i think anyway.

money saving moves:
1) my computer cord broke, just stopped charging my laptop.  $80 for a new one, but john bought it for me as a valentine's gift.  romantic and practical!  and i picked a place for dinner that i already had a $50 gift card to and made him fudge and (earlier in the month) his favorite pasta.
2) groceries the first week were bought by my mom.  i helped her and my dad cook for their super bowl party so she picked up my groceries with her own.  which is awesome, since we went to whole foods and i would never pay whole foods prices on my own during a regular month, let alone spending freeze month.
3) i watched my parents dogs while they were in florida for 10 days.  normally, they'd pay me $1000  (still less than what their boarding place would charge!) for this but instead, they're watching hawkeye for 5 days in april when i go to vegas, left me $100 for the train (yes, the overpriced metra costs $100 per week, whereas my cta costs me $100 per month), and bought and left me groceries for the entire stay.  wins for everyone.
4) had a $50 gift card to whole foods for groceries for the last week.

well it wasn't a perfect month, but i still think i did really, really well.  i'm not sure i can ever have a totally perfect spending freeze month, so i'd be happy if they were all like this!  because without including pet expenses, i only spent $30.

  1. Good luck with the wax! Way to go with the rest of your spending freeze! I think the way you handle the purpose behind a freeze is really great. :)

  2. Also, I love that you changed your comment platform. Not going to lie. :)

  3. I never realised boarding your pets was so expensive! Now I need to have a stern talk with my friends who do it all the time and somehow come up short on nights out.... hmmm...

  4. i dont think a total zero spending freeze is possible for humans!! you did very well though. blog about your experience about the brazilian.....i can take pain (hello, child birth) but something about *that* just makes it extra scary!!!!

  5. i definitely think you did great, and i totally wouldn't groom hawkeye on my own either! lol. and i had a brazilian wax once. i dont cry when i get my eyebrows waxed but i probably get them waxed once a year because i don't love it.. i really, really didnt love the brazilian lol. good luck :)

  6. I just splurged on grooming for my insane puppy this week; she refuses to cooperate when it comes to haircuts and nail trims so it's better left to the professionals. Money always well spent!

  7. I watch my finances like the most anal type A person you've ever met and I feel like I am the WORST at impulse buying... I'm really going to have to try this spending freeze. Maybe next month :)

  8. Thanks! I definitely think the purpose behind my freezes is to become more mindful of what I don't actually need RIGHT THEN like my mind likes to think I do. Hawkeye expenses should probably just be exempt from the start.
Aw glad you like the disqus! I haven't heard anything either way from people, so it's good to know that at least one person approves!

  9. It's SO expensive. Even just a basic room is expensive. Plus walks and treats are extra, as is one on one play time and whatever other charges they can invent. And you even bring your own food. So yes, don't let your friends cheap out, if they can afford boarding, they can afford going out!

  10. omg I'm totally terrified and unprepared. Seriously, tears stream down my cheeks getting my eyebrows waxed. I don't know what I was thinking putting a brazilian on my 101 list. I'm crazy.

  11. Stupid computer cords, we now have two of those universal cords, because I bought one, took it on holiday and lost the bit that plugs into the computer.....expensive lesson to learn! We are starting our spending freeze this month, inspired of course by you and driven by the fact that we are supposed to go on a short holiday in 5 weeks and have not saved enough casharooni!

  12. I use to get brazilians regularly. The first one hurts. A lot. But after that, the hair grows back in thinner and it is not nearly as bad. Take Tylenol or ibuprofen 30 minutes before your appointment, it will help a little.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Macbook air. I've had it since at least 2010, so I think it's decent for the cord to have lasted that long. NO WAY I'm replacing it once a year, so it better hold up this time!

  14. Haha well I appreciate your honesty! I know it's going to suck. I'm going in on painkillers and complete dread. No idea why I decided to put it on my 101 list, clearly I was crazy.

  15. It's so worth it! Even just giving Hawkeye a bath, with all that fur, is a never ending process. And cutting nails? No way, I couldn't even try.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yes!! it helps so much with the impulse buying. Especially when I have to report back here, I kept thinking 'nope, I do not want to tell people I caved on a $3 taco. Not happening.'

    ReplyDelete
  17. Glad I could inspire! Good luck :) It helps to have an end goal like that, it'll make the vacation so sweet not to go into debt over it! You'll have even more fun. You can definitely do it and save a ton in 5 weeks!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks for being honest with me! Everyone's all 'oh it's not so bad!' Lies. I am definitely taking some pain killers, but other than that, I've already mentally psyched myself out and prepared for the worst... I'm scared.

    ReplyDelete
  19. This is so awesome! Your mom is so minimal. Seriously though if you could only see the amount of stuff that I own, you'd freak. I think that you'll do well hitting the things left on your list. You've done so well so far. It's okay if you can't hit all 101!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think you did really well. I agree, I'm not looking to suffer and if I was I'd suffer myself before I'd let my dogs suffer. When I do a freeze I'm looking to halt the mindless spending, be it clicking around on zulily or coffees on the go, etc. Not legitimate needs.

I've never done a brazilian. You go girl. I'm afraid.

  21. Looks like all is well! Love the Valentine's day photo collage...and he did a great job with those adorable earrings!!!! I was lucky enough to get a little blue box for Vday too!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Sounds like Hawkeye needs a job! I groom Mac on my own but he has a few matted spots now that he just wont let me tend to so I think his ass is going to the groomers soon! He will perhaps appreciate me more after one trip there. Or at least that is my hope!

A Brazilian would scare the crap out of me! Not going to lie.

Sounds like you did good this month! I need to be making some blog income, damnit! And look at all your Swagbucks! I really need to get better about that!

    ReplyDelete
  23. You still made it with money earned but I know what you mean about being mindful. Your vet visit is a lot, oh boy! Seamus only costs about $120.00 for his annual visit. He has been getting allergic to food, so he is on special food. It does get expensive.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hawkeye definitely will never suffer as long as I'm alive. I don't count bills in the freeze so maybe next time I do a full freeze, I'll exempt listing pet expenses. I never go crazy ordering toys and treats (she's picky anyway) so it's just the usual fees.
I'm mentally unprepared for this brazilian. It haunts my dreams already.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ooo what did you get?!
He is very good at picking things :) I had a great valentine's day, but Hawkeye got taco bell catered to her by John so she probably had a better one!

    ReplyDelete
  26. City living, man. If I was able to get to a vet in the burbs easily, price would go down. This is also the year she gets her shots. I get her 3 year rabies and 3 year something else. It's cheaper in the long run than getting the shot every year, but the years it comes up, it's PRICEY.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Haha! Hawkeye does need a job!! Hawkeye actually likes the groomer and behaves much better there then she ever does for me. So it's worth it! But still, expensive.
The brazilian is terrifying, I'm already in a panic.
I always make $100 a month on swagbucks (it's only $75 in the post, but the other $25 posted today to my paypal account.) The blog income is unpredictable but it's nice when it's a good month!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I always look forward to your spending freeze/frost recaps because it gives me such motivation to get my financial sh!t together. I never actually get it together but I appreciate the motivation nonetheless!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pet expenses are killer. We have to get our guys groomed and meds this month. Au revoir, $200+

I think you had a great month overall. I actually love trade offs more than income at times. Especially those involving groceries.

    ReplyDelete
  30. You did great as usual!! Pets are expensive. My dog lives with my parents (apartment life) but I still spend a ton on him! You did great in spite of that though.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think you did a great job!! I really need to do this...May...I'm doing this in May.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Have you written a post about Swagbucks? I had the toolbar installed a couple of years ago but it took forever to make any $$!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I just stalked your blog and found the answer ;) Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Glad you found them! They're all under the finances tab up top, or search swagbucks in the search bar. I'll have more coming!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Haha! Well I'm glad I can motivate. You can do it, it's easier than it sounds once you get started!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes!! Doooo it. It's easier than it seems, once you're in the thick of it. I promise. Not spending will become second nature.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Dogs are definitely little money pits. But they're so worth it!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes, trade offs are the best. I know they could pay me and then I could use that money for groceries, but it's just not the same! Especially when my mom buys the good stuff and leaves it all prepped for me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with everyone here that has recommended taking a painkiller in advance of the Brazilian. I wish I'd done that!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am seriously in awe over this. I should keep track of what I spend (I know I know, it's bad that I don't!)

Also... the wax... prepare yourself. Drink or Tylenol before. Or both!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh my mom is good at secret storage! She hides things. Her attic makes my heart flutter, I can't handle it haha.
I definitely won't hit all 101, but I think I get about 97, which is pretty good!

I am in AWE of you!! I have been absolutely terrible with my spending habits lately. I need to really take this post to heart.

  43. Disqus has personally made my life so much easier as a blogger and commenter, so I hope you're having a good experience. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. You did really good girl!!! And you're right, it's not about suffering through it or being miserable, but more just being aware about what we waste money on without even thinking! Also, can we talk about how I got that $15 from CBias and don't even know what it's from?!

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's from a survey you did online. In my case (as probably everyone) it was about La Morena brand Mexican beans. Do you remember doing that? Took me awhile to figure it out!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I had to look at the Paypal transaction details to figure it out, and then look up the brand. I totally forgot about it!
