Choose Your Own Adventure [Link Up]

i can't believe we're almost to the end of these link ups.  may is the last month!  in case you weren't aware, the theme for may is 'read' and don't worry if you haven't started yet, because i haven't.  this month's challenge has my co-host's name all over it.  ever since law school 'read' has been nowhere on my radar.  i'll try my sincere hardest to read something not-work related this month.  but more on that in a minute.  first, how i did in april when the theme was finances.

how i did:
1. continue on my spending frost, at least until vegas.  i'm hilarious.  no.  notice how there was no april spending recap?  because it was dismal.  i didn't even track it much, just kept buying things.  fail.
2. try to keep a cap on the vegas spending.  shockingly, this went great.  i was under budget for vegas, and i didn't even win anything.  pass.
3. cut down more on vegas costs by being frugal with the stuff that doesn't matter.  like bringing my own brita water bottle and snacks.  indeed!  we hit the walgreens as soon as we got there, to get things like beer and sunblock.  the essentials.  we also saved money while we were there on things like food and liquor, but more on that in a separate post next week.  pass.
4. try not to go too crazy on april 27 - hawkeye's 6th birthday!  i didn't do too bad!  she pigged out on taco bell, but i didn't even get presents.  she got all her favorites that she usually can't have - tissues, chap stick, and john's socks.  it was a bonanza, and a frugal one at that.  pass.

alright on to may.  read.  i wish i had it in me to read more, i really do.  i used to love it.  i even majored in english.  (and poli sci and you read a lot there too.)  but as with everything you have a love for, law school crushed my love of reading.  and my soul.  so i haven't read much in the way of actual books in quite some time.  it would be foolish to put something like 'read 10 novels' on this list when i'll surely fail, so i'm keeping it short and simple.

1. read (and comment on) the blogs on my feedly.  at least once a week.  blog reading is reading.
2. read eat to live which i actually bought (rare for me, the only books i own are... well, dave ramsey's total money makeover.  that's it.) so i want to completely finish that instead of just skimming like i usually do.
3. assess my online library and amazon ebook wishlists.  i add random things but i haven't put anything on hold at the library in awhile (i just do ebooks.)  same with amazon - wish list it and never buy.  time to actually read the reviews, check out the previews, and commit or delete.

so, how was your finance month?  what are you planning for may?  link up below!

also, the last link up will be the first thursday in june.  steph and i are out after that - we've just got a lot going on.  ashley may continue or tweak it, or give it up altogether as well.  but if you love the idea, take it and run.  you have all our permissions.

general guidelines:
1) if you want, follow your hosts not entirely perfect, life according to steph, and keeping up with ashley and cody.  (i like twitter, that way i can follow you back and tweet you encouragement throughout the challenge.)
2) link up your post about your results below for the month - we want to hear all about what you did, how you fared, what resources you used, what you'd recommend to others, etc.
3) please link to your actual post about your results.  links not having to do with the challenge will be deleted.
4) feel free to use this button, created by the lovely sarah at venus trapped in mars.

Not Entirely Perfect

  1. I'm impressed about Vegas! Looking forward to reading more on that. I always love when I spend less on vacation than I budgeted.

  2. Yay for meeting most of your spending goals, especially while in Vegas. That's the hardest, when you're out, so good job!

  3. Way to go on coming under budget in Vegas!! I'm still dying of laughter over Hawkeye's love for Taco Bell. I guess if that's what you love, that's what you get for your birthday! ;)

  4. I'm very proud that you didn't over spoil Hawkeye! Although she deserves it! I miss her, it's been too long.

  5. Look at you being all frugal in Vegas! I'm impressed. I'm with you on the reading- I used to be an avid reader, and once nursing school came along, reading for pleasure became a distant memory. I probably average maybe 5 new books a year. And like you, these days blog reading and perez Hilton (I know I know... shameful) are my reads.

  6. wait, Hawkeye had taco bell? that is just plain awesome. agreed- blog reading is definitely reading.

  7. I think you did really well...even if the spending was dismal. Blog reading definitely counts as reading, which lately is the only reading I sometimes have time for. Good luck in May!

  8. It looks like you did really well last month (for the most part, anyway)! And hey, we all have months when our spending gets a little out of control. It sucks, but it happens.

I'm still figuring out my goals for next month, but I think focusing on blog reading/commenting is going to be a big one so I like that that was on your list. I'll keep up with things really well for a while and then suddenly I have 300 unread posts and I realize I haven't bothered to comment on anything in weeks. I'm the worst when it comes to that.

  9. congrats on your goals - and oh well, onwards and upwards with the spending frost, i'm sure you needed all the things you bought ;) eat to live sounds really interesting! also, i think if i had done something reading related at college / university (or gone to an american high school or college for that matter) they would have killed my love of reading as well, so i'm glad i didn't! that sounds silly, like my education didn't involve reading, but hopefully you know what i mean lol.

  10. I would say you did pretty darn well on your goals for last month! I am sure Hawkeye enjoyed her birthday :) Reading blogs is totally reading!!! It takes up a lot of my free time for sure.

  11. Tissues and chapstick? Sounds like a gastric birthday for Hawkeye! Haha! You did pretty good on your finance goal. Vacations are hard not to spend but buying some essentials help. Hope you get your love of reading back, I don't know what I would do if not reading.

  12. I'm planning for my son's birthday - very excited. Also getting my wisdom teeth pulled out so that's an expense I was anticipating for this month. Eh. At least I'll be drugged up for days. Lol . I still crack up when I hear you feed Hawkeye taco hell hahaha.. Happy 6th birthday to your cute bundle of joy :P Glad you kept you stuck to your goals last month; it's hard when a trip is coming up! :) Have a great one Stephanie! -Iva

  13. reading blogs totally counts as reading. i didn't read a damn thing the past few weeks because i was so absorbed with Gotham. now that it's done, i've managed to get a few books and will start reading again. maybe i'll wear my camel toe bike shorts while doing so.

  14. Aww happy birthday to your Hawkeye!! Sounds like she had a great one :) I'm going to have to look up Eat to Live. You did great one your goals!

  15. The shame of checking in on your link-up and realizing that it's ending is real :( But there's also a part of me that feels like it's perfect timing as your theme this month is "read". I must link-up next month!
Also, it's weird. Law school killed my ability to read anything but boring long case opinions, but as soon as I got out of that prison, I've been devouring books like I did in high school. I feel like law school was just holding my reader captive lol
