Childhood Home Tour

I gave you the tour of our own home, and I've glossed over my parents' place a few times through pictures, but since I was pet sitting their two dogs on Wednesday (our house is a mere 2.5 miles from my parents), I thought it would be a great opportunity to just pick up the camera and do a complete walk through like I did with our house.

What's In My Makeup Bag?

This post may contain affiliate links.

Makeup is one of those things that was the last to be downsized when I decluttered my stuff. I don't think it's truly minimal at this point even, but it's leaps and bounds from where it used to be. I mean, I had a solid 40 lipsticks at one point, at least! My makeup collection is always changing, but I wanted to share what I'm working with right now until something runs out.

Like I mentioned in last week's Three on Thursday post, my makeup bag is from Target and it fits my entire makeup collection.  (Side note, I have a matching little one for my nail supplies.)

Our Favorite (Frugal) Date Ideas

John turns 30 in two weeks, I can hardly believe it.  I wanted to mark the occasion on the blog in some way, but I already did facts about him for his last birthday, so I decided instead to list some of our favorite ways to spend time together when we actively plan for a date night.  John is a typical 'guy's guy' so a lot of things on the suggested date night lists floating around the internet get major eye rolls from him - dance class?  art gallery?  scrapbook together?  yoga?  Nope.  I mean, to be perfectly honest, those things get an eye roll from me too.  Fancy girly girl I am not.  So if you're anything like us, read on for some of our favorite and relatively inexpensive dates.

Products I Regret Buying

This post may contain affiliate links.

Yes, products I regret buying is hardly the 'recommendations' type post you're looking for... but maybe it is.  If you've been around here for any amount of time, you know that I like to give you my recommendations of favorite products (and other much loved non-monetary things, like fun YouTube videos) on Thursdays with my Three on Thursday posts.  But I haven't yet offered my opinions on things I don't like - I always figured I would just share the good stuff but now I'm realizing that you need to know about the stuff that didn't work too.  Because, man, some of these things really had me fooled: they get glowing reviews!  And now I feel like I just wasted my money, and I wish I had seen some more honest/negative reviews before making the leap.  Hopefully I can save you from making my mistakes with these products I regret buying:

A Short Summer To Do List

These seasonal goals linkups are every 3 months and yet I somehow feel like I just wrote out my spring goals list, so 3 months passed for me in the blink of an eye.  Not sure how, but here we are and here's how I did with the spring session.  Spoiler: not good.

Spring Goals

1. Make Hawkeye an Easter basket.  My parents went to Florida over Easter so I pet sat for their dogs and all three musketeers got an Easter basket.
2. Plan a visit to the Botanical Gardens.  It's on my 101 list to go and Betsy's taking me as part of her Christmas gift to me.  We haven't gone yet, luckily I was smart enough to just say 'plan' this trip, not actually go.  Betsy is still waiting on dates on her end, but I sent her my list of when I can go, and I have a back up plan if she can't make it before September.  So I consider that planned.
3. Plan and book John's birthday party.  He turns 30 on July 5 and the way his schedule worked out best was to have the party on July 8.  The planning part is pretty much done, so the next two weeks is just execution.
4. Make alcoholic granita.  Easy and delicious.  It's literally as simple as mixing a good flavored vodka with ginger ale and letting it freeze for a couple hours, scrape it up with a fork, and eat. Yum.
? 5. Set up an annual home maintenance calendar.  I started this and meant to finish it before this link up, but I didn't.  It's almost there.
X 6. Get my next Invisalign tray.  HA.  I'm ridiculous.  This should have been an easy one but I didn't even consider it.  Well, that's not true - I considered it, and promptly ditched it.  Whoops?
X 7. Get halfway to my goal weight.  I have been working on it but not hardcore, and then I made the goal slightly lower, I don't know why, I like to punish myself I guess!  I pushed this one on to summer goals, I WILL make it.
X 8. Schedule Mom's birthday dinner.  Haven't set this up yet.  Her birthday is in January but she hates the cold and everything she wanted to do was warm weather activities. But with Mother's Day and Father's Day and then John's birthday, we just haven't set up a dinner or anything for her half birthday in July.  But I will!
9. Check one 'go to' place off the 101 list.  We went to the Shedd Aquarium back in April.
X 10. Go to country night with Megan.  We haven't had time!  She works crazy hours and while we did hang out (we set up her blog, we decluttered her apartment, we saw our friends' band at a street fest), we just didn't make it to country night at a bar.  But we will definitely do it soon.

Woof.  Only 50%.  I told you I'm so much less productive in spring and summer.  I just don't have the same sort of motivation that I do in fall and winter.  Although I do think if I had just one more month for these, I could have made a little more progress.  Ah well.  On to summer goals!

Summer Goals

Like spring, summer is particularly hard for me when it comes to being productive.  I still wanted to do 10 goals because I really, really like the evenness of the number.  But I wanted a good balance of easy goals with some more time consuming things that have been nagging me (re-organize my Bloglovin/Feedly readers), so I could be productive but still get some quick and fun things done.  Now, to be totally honest, I thought I had done that with my spring goals so....

Wish me luck!  What are your goals this season?

Linking up with Steph and Sara.  It might not be today but maybe next week!

7 Easy Cocktails You Must Try This Summer

You know I'm normally a winter lover and not a fan of summer at all.  But.  Summer cocktails are absolutely something I can get behind.  Fall and winter drinks are always warming and full of sweet, comforting flavors like vanilla or cinnamon.  Summer has none of those things, it's all about the bright citrus and berry flavors, which I'm actually a big fan of.  Here are some of my tried and true favorites for all your light, refreshing summer drink needs.  And none of them are complicated because who has the time or patience for muddling and 13 ingredients?  Not this girl.

Summer Binge Watch Recommendations

I know, I know, summer is about getting outside and trying to enjoy the weather.  But I really don't like summer and being hot so I understand the need to just stay indoors sometimes.  I mean, a Netflix or Hulu binge watch weekend is just as good in July as it is in January, isn't it?!  Here's some that I definitely recommend adding to your list this season.

[Not So] Big Blog Plans

Last Friday I asked for your feedback in the form of a quick survey, and I greatly appreciate all the responses I got.  The survey is still open so if you want to take it you can, and I'm picking a winner for the $25 to Amazon by 3 p.m. central time today.  (Check last week's post if you want to know how to win.)

Most of the answers I got were kind of what I expected, as far as what you like to see and what you want to read more about.  Everyone seems to be in consensus in enjoying the real life posts and general dry humor around here, and in wanting to hear more about different aspects of organization.  'Home organizational systems' is probably the best way I can broadly describe it.  I'll definitely try to incorporate more of that in, it is what I'm very good at after all.  I have some plans on this front but nothing concrete, things are still swirling around, but once I figure it out I'll be sure to give you an update.

One thing kept coming up in the survey answers about what else you'd like to see here did sort of surprise me though, because I didn't think it would be super interesting to anyone else: how I personally 'keep up with life.'  I mean, that's basically what it all boiled down to (although, one answer did actually state those words, 'keep up with life,' a phrase I really like so thanks, whoever that was!), but there were quite a few requests for things like meal planning, decluttering and cleaning routines, things of that nature, which are all part of my 'keeping up with life' routine.  You want to know how I stay on top of everything while I still work a full time job outside of the house.  I'm thinking that the best way to blog about those things would just be to have a sort of recap of my entire week and weekend routine, broken down by time frames, posted on Mondays.  And include a financial recap with that as well.

Probably won't be starting that this coming Monday though, because Tara is coming into town this evening and we'll be day drinking tomorrow and Sunday I'll just be hungover and totally unproductive, let's be honest.  But starting next week, I think I'll try to track what I do each day and how long it takes, including what sort of food and plans I make on the weekends to get set up for the next week, and share all of that on Monday, June 19.  Then I'll get your feedback and see if it's something that's actually interesting and helpful.  It's the best way I can think of to show how everything all sort of works together with my various systems, so hopefully the posts come across how I'm currently dreaming them up in my head.

Kind of how I feel every summer - lots of thinking of things, very little motivation for follow through.  I did manage to update the look of my blog, which was totally unnecessary but a fun way to procrastinate the things I actually should be doing.  I'm a master of that sort of thing.

Have a great weekend!

8 Tips to Make Clothes Last Longer

I very, very clearly remember wearing my beloved teal tank top to a friend's birthday party.  Not just any birthday party, her 16th birthday party.  (Hi Katie.)  Yes, we are currently 32.  So I've had this dang top for 16 years and tell me it doesn't still look fantastic, I dare you.  And it's not like I haven't been wearing it over the years, it gets regular rotation given my very small wardrobe.  I mentioned last week that I would share my best tips on how to make clothes last longer, so if anyone can help you, it's this girl who's been keeping and wearing the same clothes for 16 years.  (Side lesson - don't buy trendy things.)

A June Referral Bonus

This post may contain affiliate links.

It's summertime, and Swagbucks has brought a $5 bonus! Swagbucks is a rewards site where you earn points (called SB) for things you're probably doing online already, like searching, watching videos, discovering deals, and taking surveys. Then you take those points and exchange them for gift cards to places like Amazon, Starbucks, Walmart, Target, or PayPal cash.

When you sign up through me this month, you can earn a $5 bonus! Here's how:

1. Sign up using this link

2. Earn 300 SB total before 7/1/17. You'll get a $3 (300 SB) bonus for it!

3. If you spend at least $25 through Swagbucks Shop* you'll get another $2 (200 SB) bonus on top of the cash back you'll get from shopping. If you have some shopping to do online, just go to Swagbucks first and visit the store through them. It doesn't cost you anything extra, but you'll get SB points for every dollar you spend (on top of the bonus)!

That's it. It's super easy, and Swagbucks is for real. I use it myself, and I've earned about $2,350 in PayPal cash.  Pretty sweet.

*You must receive your shopping SB before August 1st

How You Can Help Me

Blogging is work.  Some days it leans mostly towards the 'fun hobby' side of things, but there is always work involved, no doubt about that.  There's work involved in anything you choose to actively spend your time on.  And I like seeing some sort of benefit come from that, I think you can understand that.  So let me just get really, really honest here for a minute and tell you exactly how you can help me with that.

Getting Thrifty

Last month (and in March too), I talked about capsule wardrobes and budgeting for new clothing pieces, so if you read that then you might remember that I said to really weigh the benefits of thrifting and potential money saved against the investment of your time.  It's absolutely okay to spend more on a (perfect for you) item instead of trying to save some dollars by spending an entire Saturday in a handful of thrift stores attempting to hunt it down.  Because thrifting is not the easiest process.  That said, thrift stores can be a really fun adventure and save you a lot of money.  It's a fun way to bond with a friend, too, especially when you're both on a budget and usually enjoy shopping.

Memorial Day Sale

Most Memorial Day sales are about saving you money. With Swagbucks, you'll earn money too! They're offering increased cash back (in the form of SB points) at several of your favorite merchants.

Plus, if you've signed up through my links at some point this month (or do it now), you'll get a $2 (200 SB) bonus added to your account when you spend $25 or more through Swagbucks Shop before the first of June!

You can earn SB in all sorts of ways, including discovering deals and trying new products/services, watching videos, taking surveys, or just searching the web! Get your shopping done early AND get points for it! Offers last through Monday, May 29th, 2017.

Balance

Summer is definitely the time when I lose my 'balance,' so to speak.  A lot of things about my routines and goals get thrown out during the summer months, which I think it part of the reason that I don't particularly care for this season.  I always end up feeling a little lost or behind on a lot of things, just because I'm not as productive as I am in fall and winter.  In many different areas in my life.  Mainly it's because summer is so much more unpredictable as well as full of more out of the house plans.  People (in Chicago at least) are done with their winter hibernations so there's so many plans being made and things to see and do.  A lot of which come up at the last minute because 'hey it's so nice let's play hooky and do X.'

How I Maintain a Clutter-Free and Organized Home

Last Monday I talked about how I style my home to still feel as simple, clean, and calm as I like it. I also mentioned that I'd spend today answering how I maintain my clutter-free spaces and keep everything organized.  How does a minimalist not revert back to her previous non-minimalist ways, so to speak.

Things That Used To Be Important

5 Years Ago (2012, age 27)
What to write for blog content
Whether or not to go to Vegas with a group of girls I'd (mostly) never met
Going to country night every single Thursday at Houndstooth
Moving apartments
A super dramatic 'friend' and her boy/career/family/everything drama of the moment
Shopping
Cable TV

10 Years Ago (2007, age 22)
What to wear to graduation
Amassing a giant wardrobe full of Hawkeye gear
Planning a wedding (what on earth was I thinking)
The Super Bowl (Bears. We lost.)
Hand making costumes for every holiday and bar crawl
A draining ex boyfriend
Amassing a DVD collection
And a makeup collection

15 Years Ago (2002, age 17)
Whether to do newspaper or yearbook during senior year
Where to go to college
Trying to make a uniform not look like everyone else around me
Obsessing over what to wear on the weekends because I didn't have said uniform safety blanket
Figuring out how to sneak in without the dogs barking
What to do for winter dance/homecoming/prom/all the semi-formal high school events

All that to say, don't sweat... anything, really.  It's just not going to be that important forever and it'll all work itself out eventually.

Farmer's Market Tips

Farmer's market season is underway here in Chicago (with many more locations opening in early June), and summer is such a great time to stop by one near you. I love getting produce at the farmer's market because it's so much fresher than what I can get at the grocery store, it's much more conducive to shopping zero waste, and I can usually find what I'm looking for at a price better than the chain grocery store.

Real Life This Week

In my real life this week...

... I haven't made the bed once.  I can't bring myself to care.

... or put any of my makeup items way, they're scattered across the coffee table.

... the clean laundry is still sitting in the basket, waiting to be hung or folded.  I act like this task is much harder than it actually is.

... I slept downstairs on the couch because it's cooler down there and I'm too cheap to turn the air conditioner on.  Plus John was at work so I could stay up until 2 a.m. watching Forged in Fire on the History channel.  Paid for it the next day.

... I haven't turned the fans on to combat the couple of hot days, because they need to be cleaned.  Our cleaning lady is coming Saturday so I'm just waiting it out for her to do them.

... I bought and stockpiled some Christmas gifts.  Yes, I know it's May, but I had gift cards and stuff was on sale so even though it's going to be cluttering up my house for awhile, I like having it done.  I have a plan for everything I picked up and it's hiding inside my suitcase so it's not that bad right?

... I didn't bother making it to the grocery store since John was working two days this week, plus I spent Mother's Day out in the suburbs with my family (my usual grocery shopping and cooking time.)  It's like a personal challenge to see how many weird things I can eat out of the pantry or freezer and call it a meal.  Avocado on toast and a side of frozen peas?  Works for me.

... I dropped the raspberry jam while trying to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for work.  I totally let Hawkeye clean most of it before bother to get the cleaning supplies out.  This is why people have dogs, no?

... the trash is still sitting by the back door.  I can't manage to take it out even when I know John isn't here to do it.

I enjoy blogging about organization, minimalism, and goal setting.  But it's not always an organized and productive household over here, don't get any false ideas.  Real life is real life.

This post idea from Lauren originally.  One of my favorites, check it out.

How I Style and Maintain a Simple Home

A lot of people ask me about this particular topic, especially after they've done a massive declutter themselves, something like the KonMari Method.  How do you (a) keep the decor and style simple and minimalist without feeling like it's barren and (b) keep the clutter out and the organizational systems in place?  I can see why it's a concern, because I think it's inevitable that things creep back in and we want to do what we can to keep the progress we made.  And a large part of wanting to overhaul the home and get rid of things is the desire for a simpler, easier, more calm life, at least at home.  I agree with that part of it - the home should be a sanctuary, a calm away from the chaos of the outside world.  So let's start there and tackle the 'how to keep the place organized and keep the clutter out' next week.

Frugal Ways to Enjoy Summer

If you're suddenly feeling like your social calendar is filling up and you're spending more money on meeting up with friends, you are definitely not alone.  The warmer weather just naturally lends itself to more meetups, because everyone wants to get out of the house, finally.  But I don't think we need to be spending as much money as we do just to be able to see our friends.  One of my favorite (top 3?) street fests in Chicago is coming up quickly, the Belmont Sheffield Music Fest, which got me thinking about how many fun but also free or cheap things there are to do during the summer.

Natural and Effective Stress Relief

I always talk about being productive, my routines, and how much I enjoy getting things done and checking off various goals things, but I rarely talk about my strategies for dealing with stress when I inevitably just have too much going on at once.  Because it's bound to happen at some point - I'll get twice the workload at the office or the dishwasher will break, throwing off my kitchen routine.  Life just happens.  Now, I love a good Xanax as much as the next girl, but I do try to start with some natural options first because that's usually enough to get you through those 'life just happens' situations.

Here are just some of the ways I try to naturally relieve stress and anxiety:

How to (Quickly) Prep Your Home For Company

Well last week I gave you a list of some things I think make great housewarming or hostess gifts, so this week I thought I'd flip that and give you some quick tips if you're the one hosting the party rather than attending.  In particular, tips on how to prep your home if you didn't get a ton of notice that guests will be stopping by but you'd still like to graciously receive them.

Checking Off The Lists (An Update)

As we approach June, the dreaded 'dear lord the year is half over already' month, I wanted to do a check in and show you the progress I've made on my 101 in 1001 list and my 2017 goals list that I posted at the beginning of the year.  Because I feel like I've been doing pretty well!  I do participate in the link up with Steph and Sara where I set seasonal goals, but when I do that I pull a good portion of them from my 101 list, so I feel like I've been making substantial progress on all my various lists.  Overall, I feel like I've been more productive already in 2017 than I was in 2016, and I attribute that to my goals lists and my dogged obsession with checking every last thing off of them.

How I Reset For Each Week and Month

The best way I know how to ensure a great week ahead and stay on top of everything I like to get done is to spend the time 'resetting' everything on Sundays.  That way my Monday morning (the start of my work week) isn't cluttered or rushed and I feel like I'm getting off on the right foot.  It really does help everything run smoothly, from having clean clothes picked out to wear to having healthy foods prepped to eat.  Because I do not make good choices when I leave things until the last minute.  So I generally don't like to plan events for Sundays.  If it can't be avoided, then I at least try not to plan anything for Saturdays on top of that, so I get at least one weekend day to myself (plus John and Hawkeye of course) to recharge and prepare for the coming week.  I thought I would also share what I do on a monthly basis as well as what I do every Sunday.  Maybe something on this list will help you feel less stressed during your week.

Cinco de Mayo Cupcakes for Two

Betsy pointed out that I haven't made a recipe for boozy cupcakes in awhile.  And she's correct.  John isn't big on sweets and what sweet stuff he does eat, he's pretty particular about.  So if I'm not having a party, there's no one around to eat a whole platter of cupcakes, which seems like such a waste!  I thought the best way to solve this would be to share with you how to make cupcakes for two.  In particular, cupcakes for two with a Cinco de Mayo theme and since I already told you yesterday that I can't stand margaritas, I decided to just use Rumchata to make horchata flavored alcoholic cupcakes.

[At the moment, I'm having issues with getting my photos to save.  Not sure why!  But I'll add a photo if I can ever get it to work.  For now, use your imagination.]

Housewarming and Hostess Gift Ideas for Minimalists

This post may contain affiliate links.

At this very time one year ago, we were finishing up moving all of our stuff into our new house.  Time has flown indeed.  So I don't know if it's actually house buying season and house warming party season, but it feels that way to me since that's when we bought.  We didn't end up having a house warming party.  We just had so many different things come up that there was never a time to, so we just invited people over individually as they had time, and our first party was for Halloween.  Plus, since I'd been living in apartments since I went away to college in 2003, I'd amassed all of the things you actually need to live in your own space and I didn't want people to feel like they had to gift me something.  You know, being a minimalist and all.

Things I Can't Give Up

When I examine my life in general and try to see what I'm still wasting money and time on or what's not so zero waste, I've found a couple of things that keep popping up.  But unlike my 'things I stopped buying to save money,' these particular items are ones that haven't been going anywhere and I don't foresee them doing so any time soon, no matter how hard I try.  Or don't try, let's be honest.  Specifically on my things I can't seem to give up list:

Beginner's Guide to Horse Racing

I've always been wary to post a guide to horse racing because there's so many ins and outs and even I don't know everything and we've owned thoroughbreds (aka race horses) my entire life.  A guide from me will never be perfect.  But, I have taught so many of my friends the basics that I at least feel confident telling you about the same.  With the Kentucky Derby coming up this weekend, I think now is the best time so at the very least, you know how to get your bets in!

Seven Years of Hawkeye

Everyone's favorite fluff nugget celebrated her 8th birthday yesterday.  I know, I can't believe it either.  Since I adopted Hawkeye the day before her first birthday (I couldn't leave her in a shelter to not have a birthday party now could I?!), she's been with me for the last 7 years.  Seven.  Time flies.

In that time she knew 2 different (very brief) boyfriends before John (we both agree John is the best - we started dating John just a couple weeks before her 4th birthday.  Yes, we.) and 5 apartments before moving into our house, so I think we're both happy to be feeling so settled down this year.  And I have absolutely no idea what I would do with out her.  She greets everyone like they've been gone 1000 years, she licks my tears away when I cry, she cuddles in bed with me every night John is at work.  And sometimes even when he's home, she'll just wedge herself right in the middle.  She's the most patient and loving and happy dog anyone has ever met.

Okay okay without further ado, let's get to the real reason you're here today - massive amounts of dog photos.  You're welcome.

Happy 8 years of life to my bestest friend in the entire world.  We're going to have 88 more together.
