Seven Years of Hawkeye

Everyone's favorite fluff nugget celebrated her 8th birthday yesterday.  I know, I can't believe it either.  Since I adopted Hawkeye the day before her first birthday (I couldn't leave her in a shelter to not have a birthday party now could I?!), she's been with me for the last 7 years.  Seven.  Time flies.

In that time she knew 2 different (very brief) boyfriends before John (we both agree John is the best - we started dating John just a couple weeks before her 4th birthday.  Yes, we.) and 5 apartments before moving into our house, so I think we're both happy to be feeling so settled down this year.  And I have absolutely no idea what I would do with out her.  She greets everyone like they've been gone 1000 years, she licks my tears away when I cry, she cuddles in bed with me every night John is at work.  And sometimes even when he's home, she'll just wedge herself right in the middle.  She's the most patient and loving and happy dog anyone has ever met.

Okay okay without further ado, let's get to the real reason you're here today - massive amounts of dog photos.  You're welcome.

Happy 8 years of life to my bestest friend in the entire world.  We're going to have 88 more together.

Zero Waste Cleaning and Other Essentials

This post may contain affiliate links.

We started this month with the Zero Waste Beginner's Guide and followed that up with the kitchen essentials and then the bathroom essentials, two of the biggest trash making rooms in a home.  Today, I'm finishing up zero waste month with some zero waste cleaning essentials and other little things I thought might be helpful to add.

Add It To Your Karaoke List

The last Tuesday of the month = the 'add it to my list' link up that I've had so much fun with the last 3 times.  I was thinking about what other sort of 'add it to your list' things I really wanted to share with you and considered a favorite songs list, but then Tara decided she was coming into town and I instantly changed it to a 'karaoke picks' list.  I always make Tara sing karaoke with me.  And anyone else I can rope into it.  And by myself, I have no issues with that either.  I love karaoke and for the record, I cannot sing at all.  I don't think that's a pre-requisite though so I keep karaoke-ing away!

Birthday Pup-Cakes

Someone...

is turning 8 this week!  We actually celebrated early.  Well, we had one celebration early - we have plenty more celebrating to do.  Back when I was pet sitting for my mom's dog's over Easter, we had a birthday/Easter celebration because any excuse to make cupcakes for dogs, am I right?

Things I Don't Blog About

I think it was back in March when I posted about my little known facts and mentioned how hard it was to come up with them since I share so much of my life already.  There are topics on this blog I've gone over many times and for most aspects I'm happy to be an open book.  But there are times when I purposely avoid topics, and it's not because they don't fit my blog theme or niche (I don't have one, clearly.)  They just generally fall under my 'don't touch it' umbrella because I just don't want to. These include (but probably aren't limited to):

Zero Waste Bathroom Essentials

This post may contain affiliate links.

Continuing on for zero waste month, today I'm telling you about all my bathroom essentials.  If you missed the beginner's guide to zero waste you can find that here, and last week I talked about my kitchen essentials, since that room makes the most trash.  The second area where you make the most trash though is definitely the bathroom.

Tell Me Something About You

It's sort of a weird feeling to be caught between really far ahead and also really far behind.  It doesn't make much sense, really; how can you be both?  But that's where I am right now.  I'm taking today to catch up a little.  You see, I'm totally on top of blog posts.  I've put a post up every single week day since the beginning of this year, and as you're reading this, I have another 74 completely finished and scheduled.  All the way through the end of June.  Yep, I'm totally on top of that!

But, I've put off responding to comments for awhile.  Whoops.  Like, I think I'm about a full month behind now.  At least 3 weeks for sure but I'm thinking it's probably a month now - I'm too nervous to check.  Since I hate when bloggers don't respond to comments, I'm not just going to let them sit there.  I'm taking today to respond, so don't be too surprised when you get a really, really delayed response to something you forgot you said.  My bad!

So I pushed back today's scheduled post and instead, while I play a bit of catch up, leave me a comment below and let me know something about you.  Either some new fact I don't know or something fun that's happening in your life.  Whatever you feel like sharing!  (And I'll be back tomorrow with more zero waste essentials you need in your life.)

Self Care and Getting Dressed

Last week wrapped up the the 5 part capsule wardrobe series I had going and while I plan on (eventually....) posting my updated, current capsule wardrobe, to Instagram at least, I've exhausted pretty much everything else I have to say on that topic.  At least as far as the 'what' and 'how' of it is concerned.  But I've still been sitting around pondering the 'why,' and that's something I haven't addressed here yet.  I think it's equally if not more important.

Our Co-Habitating Must Haves

We're about a month away from having lived in our house for a full year now, isn't that crazy?  I don't know if it was just because we were so busy the 6 months John was in the fire academy or what, but it honestly feels like we just moved in.  It certainly doesn't feel like one year.  And speaking of anniversaries, yesterday marked 4 years that John and I have been (officially) dating.  Doesn't feel like 4 years there either!

Zero Waste Kitchen Essentials

This post may contain affiliate links.

Like I mentioned last week in the beginner's guide to zero waste, I'm continuing the series by sharing some of my essentials, divided up by area of use.  This week, we're starting with the kitchen, since that tends to be the area where you make the most trash.  Let's put an end to it!

My Simple Money Strategy

It's been awhile since I talked about my personal money strategy here on this blog.  In the past I explained how I used YNAB (You Need A Budget) software to track my spending and finances, and I'll always post when I'm doing some sort of wallet watch or total ban on spending, but as I moved more towards a simpler lifestyle and buying so much less, I neglected to update on how that applies to tracking my finances.  And the short answer is: I don't.

Maintaining A Capsule Wardrobe

You've made it to part 5!  I really had to sort this out in my head before I started this series and 5 seemed like the natural breaking points between topics, but I wasn't sure I could power through and make it all the way here.  You know how I like to quit things early sometimes.  But here we are.  As a refresher - part 1 was about finding your personal style, part 2 was about purging your closet, part 3 was about the different types of capsule wardrobes, and part 4 was about buying pieces for your wardrobe on a budget.  This final post in the series is about maintaining the capsule wardrobe and the minimalist closet over time.

Happy (Almost) Rex Manning Day

Tomorrow is Rex Manning Day, one of my favorite days to celebrate all year.  If you've followed my blog for at least a year, then you already know about this because I remind youEvery April 8.  Which is the official Rex Manning Day date, I didn't just pick it randomly.  And what the heck is it, you ask if you never been here before?  The date to celebrate Rex Manning, the fictional celebrity star, and all things Empire Records.  Which is a movie from 1995, please tell me you at least know that much.  Because it is, after all, what my blog is named after.  My favorite line from my favorite movie.

Beginner's Guide to Zero Waste

Today, I need to tell you about zero waste.  And it's place in my life.  I touch on it here and there but I have done no dedicated posts to the topic and or specifically talked about what I've changed in my life since I wrote this post at the end of January 2016.  And that's crazy to think that it hasn't come up because so much has changed.  I mean, I hit all those baby steps I listed and more.

Slightly Obsessive Things I've Noticed I Do

Do you ever realize how blind you are to your own little quirks?  I mean, that's just you, it's not weird!  Since moving in with John full time, he's pointed out a couple of things that he refers to as 'pretty OCD' which is a slight exaggeration if you ask me.

Build Your Capsule Wardrobe on a Budget

I can't believe we're already on part 4 of the capsule wardrobe series.  I also can't believe I've had that much to say about it so far, and I still don't feel like I'm done.  If you need a reminder - part 1 was about finding your personal style, part 2 was about purging your closet, and part 3 was about the different types of capsule wardrobes you could try.  Today, I wanted to talk about how to find those pieces you still need to complete your capsule, but on a budget.

Dog Friendly Chicago

If you have a dog in Chicago, you're probably aware of all the dog specific places you could adventure to.  There's the dog beach (HRH Princess Hawkeye and sand?  Absolutely not.), the 606 running trail, and the various dog parks (she likes the Lake Shore East Park the best.)  And you can bring your dog if you're dining outside in a restaurant's patio area.  But besides those places that are specifically marketed to dogs and dog owners, I wanted to share the places that I take Hawkeye to on a regular basis that you might not have thought of.

Top 10 Cruelty Free Picks Under $10

This post may contain affiliate links.

I'm back with more picks, by popular request.  Back in early March I posted my top 5 cruelty free beauty products for under $5 and many people said they'd love a follow up with more options and brands that have cheap cruelty free products that still work.  So for this version, I'm giving you 10 more picks that are all under $10, and I tried to include different brands and different types of items so you could get a full range, should you want to make a drugstore cruelty free makeup kit for yourself.

What's Currently On My Own List

This post may contain affiliate links.

I had a lot of fun the last two months linking up with Lauren and Bre for their 'add it to my list' blog hop.  There's been a ton of good posts I've read and I've added a few things to my own various lists from them.

Eat, Drink, and Be Lauren

For a different twist today, rather than share what I think you should add to your list (well, maybe you want to add these too!), I wanted to share with you what's currently on my own wish list, whether I got the suggestions from the link up or not.  It's sort of a collection of things that have withstood the various cullings and remain steadfast on my list, but the cheap minimalist in me just can't bring myself to pull the trigger just yet.  So help me out if you're familiar with anything on my list - do I go for it or delete it for good?

Pick a Capsule Wardrobe That's Right For You

Welcome back to the capsule wardrobe process.  If you need a reminder, first we looked at how to find your personal style, and then how to purge your current wardrobe to match your personal style and make room for your capsule wardrobe.  Today, we're looking at some different types of capsule wardrobes out there so you can figure out all the possible ways you could go in your own closet.  And I'll talk about what worked for me in particular.

The Answers You've Been Looking For

Except not really at all, let's be honest.  But I did ask a couple weeks ago if you had any questions for me, so I'm finally back with the answers!  First, I do need to mention that I'm a liiiiiittle behind on responding to your comments... by like two weeks.  Ooopsie.  I promise I'll be getting to that today and this weekend.  Good thing I already have a blog post done and scheduled for every week day from now until the end of June (yep), so at least I'm winning something.

Other Ways to Cleanse for Spring

I already gave you all my tips for spring cleaning, as far as it applies to cleaning your home.  But I think spring is a great time to also cleanse other areas of your life, because why not?!  There's definitely a link between a clean living space and the motivation to complete more goals and tasks, so if you're on a high from that clean house you just made, you might as well harness that energy and clean up some other areas.

10 Tiny Things That Make Me Happy

Tuesdays are just a rough, rough day.  Far and away my least favorite day of the week, no question.  Mondays really aren't a problem for me.  Sure, going back to work after a weekend isn't fun, but Tuesday is when the disasters come and I get 10,000 phone calls and fires to put out - people are too busy doing their own thing on Mondays to bug me, so they wait until Tuesdays it seems!

I'm trying very hard to have a more positive outlook on Tuesdays.  Today specifically by remembering and enjoying the little things that make me smile each day.  I always think it's easy to list the major things in my life that make me happy (Hawkeye!), but that doesn't mean the little things are any less important.

How to Purge Your Closet for a Capsule Wardrobe

Last week I talked about the basis of a capsule wardrobe - finding your style.  The next step in the process is to purge your closet of what you currently have that's not going to suit your style or capsule plans.

Spring Goal Planning

Hard to believe a new season is almost upon, but it's that time again - seasonal goals.  I love setting seasonal goals with this link up because it helps me pick things to focus on off my bigger, longer goals list and I end up accomplishing more this way.  Before we get into my spring expectations though, let's look back at winter.

Winter Goals

I posted my 10 winter goals all the way back in December of 2016, before Christmas even.  Doesn't that seem like a really long time ago for some reason?

Preztels for St. Patrick's Day

Chocolate covered pretzels are seriously the easiest and yet most crowd pleasing dessert to make.  You don't actually need instructions for this, trust me.  But I still wanted to show off the ones I made for an early St. Patrick's Day celebration at John's firehouse because they turned out adorable.

Top to Bottom (Easy, Natural) Spring Clean

Spring officially begins (in the Northern hemisphere at least) on Monday.  No matter what the groundhog says or what the weather is, according to the calendar spring is arriving.  So tell me - do you spring clean?  You know, like Danny Tanner, purging and organizing and opening windows and getting every last bit of dirt out of the house?

Find and Embrace Your Style for a Capsule Wardobe

Late last year I posted about my current capsule wardrobe.  Since we haven't had a change of seasons since then, it's pretty much the same, although I already know what I'd like to get rid of when the weather warms up and what I'd like to add.  Which was one of the questions that came up, when I originally posted that - how do you make changes?  I actually got a few questions about capsule wardrobe basics, about getting started and finding the right pieces and maintaining something small (but not that small) for yourself.  And about why my system has nothing to do with having a certain number of neutral tops and bottoms that can all be mixed and matched for the most options.

Hangover Helpers

This post may contain affiliate links.

Hangovers are still a thing in my life.  Actually, they're more of thing now that I'm older because I just cannot bounce back like I used to in college.  And I haven't grasped the 'you're too old to be drinking that much and getting hangovers' concept and I probably never will because I like to have cocktails and I enjoy going out and parties in general.  Which we've been doing a lot of lately, between graduation and celebrating and Mardi Gras.  And now with St. Patrick's Day coming up, I figured it was time to compile some of my best hangover helpers to share with you.

How I Stay Productive and Focused All Day

I tend to get quite a bit done each day, in my opinion at least.  I don't often find myself 'wasting time' unless I make a conscious effort to do so.  So something I'm really good at is staying incredibly productive to get the most done that I can, and then re-focusing myself when my mind starts to stray.  I can see the advantage, particularly from a creative stand point when I'm blogging, of letting my thoughts wander, but I also have some strategies that seem to work well for the times that I recognize that I need to buckle down and get back to work.  If you struggle with wanting to get more done in your day without losing focus, I hope my tips will help you too.
