18 Before 2018

August 30, 2017

There's something about September and the going back to school season that always gets me motivated again, even though it's been many a couple years since I've gone back to school.  I'm also one of those people that's motivated by the changing of the year too, so I guess it's that 'fresh start' magic that inspires me to get working on some goals and general to-dos that I've been procrastinating.  Plus plan new goals, naturally.  In fact, I've already been thinking about goals for 2018.  Anyone else that way?  Am I the only one that starts planning this far in advance?  I know some things I want to tackle next year, plus I have my 101 in 1001 list ending and potentially a new one starting, so the goals have been at the forefront of my mind lately.

Products That Keep Me The Most Organized

Back to school season always brings with it a flurry of 'get organized' products.  And even though I'm 7 years removed from school with no intention of going back, my organization loving heart is just so giddy at all the new stuff to play with.  Helloooo sales!  In case you didn't know, it's not just sales on school supplies.  Since college is back in session too, it's sales on everything you might need to get a dorm room in order, like hangers and tupperware (two things I talk about on my list below), so I figured it was a good time to share the stuff that I really love that you might want to look for for your own home.

Things I 'Can't' Live Without

You have to know I'm not serious when I say 'can't live without,' it's called hyperbole.  I actually can't live without water, food, and air, the rest is all debatable.  This is more like 'it would really suck to live without this stuff.'  (Not including Hawkeye or any people.)

Favorite Drinking Games

August 25, 2017

The day I'm too old to enjoy a good drinking game is the day you can just put me in the ground, friends.  I love drinking games.  Sitting around and sipping on beers just isn't as enjoyable for me as it is when there's some sort of drinking game involved, preferably involving a deck of cards.  I never leave home without one, for the record.  Seriously, it's like phone, money, lip balm, keys, deck of cards.  The important things.  So naturally I've established plenty of favorites over the years.  And today marks 700 posts on this blog, so what better way to celebrate than to tell you about all the ones I love to play?

(More) Favorite Must Have Kitchen Tools

August 23, 2017

So glad you liked the idea yesterday of how to make your salad and other produce last longer in your fridge!  The jars and sealing system are definite must haves in my kitchen, which means they've really earned their keep.  I try to keep my kitchen as minimalist as the rest of my house, so I'm not big on keeping around gadgets that don't get a lot of use.  Kitchen cabinet space is prime real estate, of course, and you gotta earn your keep if you want to live in there.  I'm getting more into cooking now and don't mind investing it good pieces, since we finally don't plan on moving (I did the math, I've lived in 11 different places since I moved to college at 18 until we bought this house when I was 31.) I thought today I would share what else is currently among my kitchen favorites.

Healthy Habit Hack: Fresh Salad for a Week+

August 22, 2017

When it comes to making the whole 'vegan' and 'healthy' thing work, meal planning and prepping is a must.  I've mentioned before that I try to prep as much as possible on Sundays so that everything is set for the week, but the question that I get most often is about how I keep things fresh until the end of the week.  How am I eating for lunch on Friday what I prepped on Sunday?  I figured I could start by telling you about how I can make salad on Sunday and keep it fresh all week long.

As Told By John

August 21, 2017

John pulled his first 48 hour straight shift at the firehouse this past weekend.  I mean, on the plus side he had 3 days off in a row before and now has 3 days off after, but it was still a chunk of time to be away.  And I spent the whole weekend pet sitting my parents dogs, but even though wrangling 3 pups keeps you busy, we still found time in the days for a lot of texting.  I even found a 'boyfriend tag' on the internet so I decided to record his answers to some questions about me as a blog post, because why not on a Monday morning.  Wondering how well he knows me?  Read on:

Do I have any weird obsession(s)?  If so, what?
"Hawkeye."
That's NOT weird, dude.  You're weird if you're not obsessed with her.  And for the record, he's just as obsessed so I don't know why he's calling me out!  As for what I think the answer would have been?  Nicolas Cage.  He definitely agreed when I told him that one.  He then also added "oh and that thing where you go in the makeup store and come out with your hand covered in colors but you don't buy anything."  It's Sephora, and it's called swatching, and it's not weird.

50 Free Things To Do in Chicago

August 18, 2017

Even though there's a lot to splurge on when it comes to city living, particularly things you'd rather not spend money on, I don't think entertainment in Chicago has to be expensive at all.  Personally, I'm all about the free stuff, which I can find year round.  Why spend money to enjoy experiences when you don't have to?  Whether you're a local or just visiting, we pulled together some of our very favorite things to do that are either totally free or at most just a couple of dollars that you're sure to love.

Goals Check In

August 16, 2017

I was working on quarterly goals for awhile, but Steph and Sara ended their related link up and they're both going in a different direction for future goals and plans.  And I agree with Steph that you should change it up when something stops working for you, so I plan on following her lead.

Blog Post Ideas I Actually Want to Read

August 15, 2017

Everything is harder for me in the summer.  Yeah yeah, it's like beating a dead horse for me to keep repeating that around here but it's the truth.  I just can't stand summer.  I'm less productive and motivated and creative and all around slightly crabbier because nothing makes me crabby like being hot.  I'm thrilled that fall is approaching, because it means I'm ever closer to winter, my favorite.  (I live in a good city to be such a winter lover, but I'm still open to moving to Alaska, trust me.)  Of particular struggle lately though is blog motivation and post ideas.  I've put up 165 posts so far this year and have plenty more for the last 3 months of this year, but that's because the colder months just lend themselves to so many more ideas for me.

Paperless Life

August 14, 2017

Like I mentioned last week, I don't keep paper.  (John's been a little more resistant, since he was raised to keep everything, but he's coming around to the process.)  Digital storage makes my life easier and simpler, as does letting go of the notion that I 'might need it, one day.'  Spoiler: you don't.  There are so many good reasons to stop the paper madness - saving trees, saving money, saving sanity.  To me, the biggest benefit of going paperless as much as possible is that it reduces the amount of clutter in the home.  People don't realize what an issue paper is, because a few scraps here and there seem so small.  What they don't see is all of that paper piled together in one spot.

Treat Yourself Without Money or Food

August 11, 2017

Friday has a arrived and let me tell you, I needed it to get here this week.  This one has been a doozy, for many reasons.  But the weekend is here, Tara will arrive in a few hours with her new Bichon puppy, Beau, and we have a full and fun itinerary ahead.  The week did get me thinking though about the different ways I could treat myself for getting through it, if I didn't have a concert already lined up (and let's be clear, I'm more of an 'open bar and free food' type person than a concert person.)  So many of the ways I treat myself involve shopping or food, and even though I don't spend very much when that happens, it's still not a great habit to be in.  The food one is even worse, since my food rewards are often pizza and ice cream.  If you're anything like me, read on for my ideas on how to treat yourself without money or food.

Tips for Maintaining a Vegetarian/Vegan Diet

August 9, 2017

This post may contain affiliate links.

When someone finds out I'm a vegetarian (and sometimes vegan, but man, cheese), I usually get one main question - how?  Particularly in this country, and of course in the Midwest where I live, it seems impossible to not subsist on that meat and potatoes diet.  But I promise, it's really not that hard.  It's not even something I think about.

Creating a Cleaning Schedule

August 8, 2017

I don't know what it is about routines and schedules, but you seem to love them as much as I do.  Or maybe I just draw that type of audience?  Birds of feather and all that.  I've posted about my daily routine before and how I stay on top of everything, but how I keep the house clean enough for anyone to stop by at a moment's notice is something I probably get the most questions about.  They key is definitely in the scheduling, and in staying on top of the little tasks so they don't become big, daunting tasks.  Simple, not stressful.

Last week I posted about how I get my bathroom clean in just minutes and a few weeks before that I posted about my annual home maintenance calendar.  My cleaning calendar is similar to my home maintenance calendar, and I actually have them set up together in a single Google calendar (all about that paperless life in this house!)

Things I Don't Ever Feel Like Doing

August 7, 2017

A post idea straight up stolen from Steph because woof, it's been a weekend, and sometimes you need to just not think very hard.

Talk on the phone

Fold laundry, mostly John's t-shirts

Go to the beach

Wear a strapless bra

What I'm Curious About Lately

August 4, 2017

I have a growing list of things I've been curious about lately.  Things I've been researching that I would like to dive in on but haven't quite found what I'm looking for yet.  I mean really, it's a list of things I could use your advice and opinions on, so please share your knowledge in the comments.

Chicago Street Fests: Best Cover Bands

August 2, 2017

The one thing I actually do really love about summer in Chicago is definitely the street fests.  There's very few I don't attend and thoroughly enjoy.  But there's multiple options most weekends, all over the city, so when I'm not choosing based on proximity (#lazygirlatheart), I choose based on which cover bands are playing that we most want to see.

5 Minutes to a (Naturally) Clean Bathroom

August 1, 2017

I like having a clean and organized house, that's no secret.  But I also love to be efficient and while I enjoy the feeling of a clean bathroom, I don't particularly enjoy the whole process of cleaning it.  So I've streamlined it - at least a basic clean that gets us through each week until our cleaning lady comes and does the super deep cleaning (looking at you, grout and baseboards) once a month.  Because cleaning a bathroom doesn't have to be a daunting and time consuming process.  The best part is that my system uses only two natural cleaning products so there's no chemicals and you can be in and out in just 5 minutes, with a few extra minutes if you have time for some optional tasks.  How? Glad you asked.
