Things I Make Sure I Do Daily

October 27, 2017

I love a good routine, that's no secret.  I love when things run smoothly and I love organization, so routines are right up my alley.  It's easy enough to plan out the big time blocks in my day (commuting time, work time, sleep), but I try to make sure to fit in certain small things that I know from experience make my entire day so much better.

Here are the 18 things I noticed I make sure I do every day because I believe they make my day so much better - happier, more smoothly, more productive and less chaotic.  I tried to put them in order from morning to evening:

Best Money I Spend Each Month (Currently)

October 25, 2017

I mentioned in my 'decisions I don't make' post that I never think about bill paying because I've automated so many things, which got me thinking about where my money is going each month.  You already know I live pretty frugally, but that doesn't mean I don't still spend on things that absolutely aren't essential.  There's still plenty of items that are costing me, but that I've deemed as worth it to keep on the budget.  For now.  Here's a couple of the ones I think are the best:

Pumpkin Carving Tips and Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

October 24, 2017

I have a love hate relationship with carving pumpkins.  Because I love the idea of it and I love pumpkin seeds.  And I actually love the process of getting the pumpkin ready for carving.  But I had the actual carving of the design part because I suck at that.  Doesn't stop me from trying each year though, and we'll definitely be doing it this weekend so be sure to check my Instagram for those photos.  Today though, I'm sharing some tips I've learned over the years to help make the process easier.  Scroll to the bottom for a recipe on how to roast pumpkin seeds.

Last Minute Lazy Girl Costumes

October 23, 2017

Like I showed you Friday, I always dress up for Halloween.  I used to spend way more on my costumes, buying the pre-made super pretty (and let's be honest, super skanky) ones that you get at places like Part City and Spirit Halloween.  But I've gotten cheaper and less ridiculous over the years, with a lot of more creative DIY costumes.  Or sometimes I just wear a footed onesie because whatever, it's cold on October 31 in Chicago.  I start planning my costume pretty early so I can rope my friends into various group costumes, but there's always those couple of times that I add a last minute party to my to do list and I don't want to wear the same thing, so I turn to a list of easy and lazy last minute costumes that I pretty easily get together on a whim.

Fears, Legitimate and Otherwise

October 17, 2017

You know how you go into haunted houses at Halloween and think 'meh it's cool looking but it's not scary?  Now if they had ____, that would be scary!'  No, just me?  (Read to the bottom for my version of a haunted house.)  I always think about what they could put into a haunted house that would truly scare the crap out of me, and I feel like Halloween in general gets me thinking about I'm actually afraid of in life.  And how deep that fear goes, because apparently, there's levels.  There's normal fear where you get a little anxious, but it's considered a phobia if you avoid what you're afraid of at all costs.  I have both.

Things That Don't Annoy Me

October 16, 2017

I have a quick post for you today because I am determined to get comments responded to.  I've been putting it off and I'm pretty behind.  Probably like 2 months behind but meh.  I don't plan on going that far back to respond but I do feel like I should tackle the last two weeks.  **UPDATE: I'm not doing it.  I'm too lazy.  I'll be better going forward, starting today.**  So today, a quick post about 5 things that don't annoy me.  (A departure from my usual and numerous pet peeves.)  It's not just things that don't annoy me in general though, but I'm specifically talking about here the things that seem to annoy a lot of other people, but don't bother me in the slightest.  I see them pop up often on lists of complaints or annoyances but they're never on mine.

3 Fictional Characters I'm Most Like

October 13, 2017

Originally I was considering which fictional characters I think would describe me best to see if I could craft a Halloween costume out of any of them and when that question made my list of blog post ideas, I knew I had to write about it at some point.  However, I just couldn't think about enough things I wanted to say about each one to make it a real post.  I mean, I don't think I need to explain why I'm most like Karen Walker, I think you can get the gist from just reading my blog or following my Instagram.

Just because it's mid October doesn't meal the tailgating fun is over.  We've got a lot of weeks left!  It's never too cold to tailgate, and if you think it is, you're doing it wrong.  Allow me to help.  We just went to Iowa last weekend and we'll be tailgating here in Chicago at Northwestern next weekend, and we've been know to head to Indiana for my birthday weekend in late November - cold is nothing.  All you need is to bring the right supplies and you'll be able to keep yourself toasty warm all morning.

Decisions I Don't Make Anymore

October 10, 2017

I mentioned yesterday that one of the decluttering roadblocks that often comes up is related to decision fatigue.  If you make a lot of decisions in a day, you don't have much decision making power left to be able to rationally deal with the stuff you want to declutter.  But it doesn't have to just be about decluttering - making any sort of decision is draining and it'll help you be much less stressed if you start cutting some of those out of your life altogether.  It's worth it to take some time now to set up your life so future you has way less decisions to make.  Here are some decisions that used to take up my brain power each day that I just don't make anymore:

Common Decluttering Roadblocks

October 9, 2017

This post may contain affiliate links.

Decluttering is an ongoing process for me, I don't think it's ever 'done.'  New things are always coming in when you own a house and live with someone else, so I'm always reassessing.  That said, we're about as close to done as a home could be so I get a lot of (a) requests from other people to help declutter their homes and (b) questions like 'well what about ____?'  Certain questions and roadblocks are pretty common, so I've rounded up a couple and given my thoughts on how to combat them.

Crock Pot Breakfast Casserole and Easy Clean Up

October 4, 2017

Let me tell you about one of John's very favorite breakfast options - crock pot casserole.  I love making this on the weekends.  I can throw everything in on Saturday night and it's ready to go when we wake up on Sunday morning.  Either I portion it out for the week for breakfast for John or I make it when we're hosting a football watching weekend, since the games start at 11 and everyone's hungry.  With the super easy and quick clean up, I can then use the same crock pot to make something for the rest of the day, like ribs or chili.  All around, it's a favorite in this house.

Ways to Save Money When It Gets Cold

October 3, 2017

When does is start getting colder where you are?  It did for us, then got warm again, and is now cooling again so it's cooled down here but it's not turn the heat on level cold, at least not my version of turn the heat on cold.  My version differs from John's, to be sure.  I believe in putting on lots of layers before changing the temperature inside the house!  I do everything in my power to convince him to last until November 1.  If it were just me, I'd probably push that to December 1, but he's not having it.  It gets pretty cold on Halloween here.  The week before is usually still decent but for some reason, Halloween weekend and the actual day of are always particularly chilly.
